English IV AP A

Writing

  • Construct topic sentences for paragraphs which introduce the reader to the paragraph as a whole without simply summarizing the plot or stating a fact from the work of literature.

  • Compare and contrast various literary elements among works of literature and discuss how those elements apply to the work as a whole.

  • Classify the characteristics in a search for identity and how it applies to characters in literature.

  • Deconstruct a prompt in order to understand the best way to answer the multiple questions that are being asked.

  • Organize ideas into an essay with a thesis statement in the introduction, well constructed paragraphs, a conclusion, and transition sentences that connect paragraphs into a coherent whole.

  • Create thesis statements that follow the claim, direction, connection format that are not meant for a traditional 5 paragraph essay.

  • Properly support quotes which they use as evidence in their essays either through embedded quotes or explanation of quotes following the quote.

Literature

  • Differentiate between formula fiction and fiction of literary merit.

  • Define, identify, and use various literary devices as they become significant in class.

  • Create meaningful questions based on short stories to facilitate class discussions.

  • Use the rhetorical triangle to analyze short stories.

  • Classify the characteristics of social disconnectedness and how it applies to characters in literature.

  • Develop a working vocabulary to accompany character.

Language

  • Demonstrate control of standard English through use of grammar, usage, and mechanics.

  • Understand strategies for expressing ideas clearly and effectively in a variety of oral contexts.

  • Practice various ways to combine sentences and practice using various sentence structures in their writing.

Research

  • Define, identify, and avoid using plagiarism.

  • Properly cite items in MLA format for a works cited page.

Writing

  • Proofread both their own and other student's papers to ensure logical progression of the paper and quotes that are significant and supported.

  • Identify elements that accompany British humor and create British humor of their own.

  • Write in a variety of modes.

Literature

  • Construct, and then evaluate through the literature an understanding of the nature of honesty and deception.

  • Use the rhetorical triangle to analyze poetry.

  • Construct, and then evaluate through the literature an understanding of injustice, human existence, and how these things often work together in literature.

  • Construct, then evaluate through the literature an understanding of why and how wars and rebellions are used in literature.

  • Compare and contrast symbols, meanings, and themes of poems.

  • Identify and interpret the meaning behind the shift/contrast in poems.

  • Identify, analyze, and evaluate the effect and use of metrics, rhyme scheme, rhythm, alliterations, and other conventions of verse in complex poetry.

Language

  • Proofread, evaluate, and revise individual assignments, peer assignments, and writing samples for various grammar, punctuation, and structure problems.

Research

  • Create a resources sheet for the digital poetry project.

  • Use the Internet and other sources to find appropriate images, sounds, ect. for the digital poetry project.

Multiple Choice

  • Develop and practice careful reading techniques so that they can more readily use evidence form a text to interpret ideas, recognize relationships, and validate judgments.

  • Practice answering questions for the AP multiple choice section of the exam.

  • Practice using context clues to decode unfamiliar words for college level poetry and prose passages.

  • Write a poem which mimics the form and style of other poets.

  • Define, recall, and use vocabulary for the AP test at an 80% pass rate.

  • Demonstrate the ability to consistently score 6 or higher on practice AP essays written in 40 minutes.

  • Drawing on reader's comments, revise papers to focus on the thesis, develop ideas, address potential objections, employ effective transitions. identify a clear beginning and ending, correct logic errors, and identify areas for further development.

  • Defend the relevance, brilliance, and literary quality of poems to their classmates.

  • Compare and contrast films to the books/stories they depict.

  • Analyze a literary work, using the characteristics of the literary time period that it represents.

Language

  • Develop an understanding of various themes in literature.

Multiple Choice

  • Demonstrate the ability to understand and write AP multiple choice questions.

  • Demonstrate close reading of prose, poetry, and AP questions.

Research

  • Define and narrow a research topic.

  • Write an extended research paper, using primary and secondary sources and technology and graphics as appropriate.

  • Select reliable sources using appropriate criteria and avoiding the overuse of any one source.

  • Cite sources using MLA format with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Skillfully and strategically quote, paraphrase, and summarize text, ideas, or other information taken form print or other electronic sources.

  • Cite resources using standard format appropriate to the discipline with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Incorporate ideas and quotations effectively and correctly within text.

  • Embed quotations and graphics from other sources when appropriate.
