1st Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will successfully construct topic sentences for paragraphs which introduce the reader to the paragraph as a whole without simply summarizing the plot or stating a fact from the work of literature.
  2. The learner will deconstruct a prompt in order to understand the best way to answer the multiple questions that are being asked. 
  3. The learner will differentiate between formula fiction and fiction of literary merit.
  4. The learner will define, identify, and use various literary devices as they become significant in class.
  5. The learner will create meaningful questions based on short stories to facilitate class discussion.
  6. The learner will be able to define, identify, and avoid using plagiarism.
  7. The learner will compare and contrast various literary elements (plot, setting, characters, etc.) among works of literature and discuss how those elements apply to the work as a whole.
  8. The learner will develop skills for answering the multiple choice section of the AP exam. 
  9. The learner will classify the characteristics in a search for identity and how it applies to characters in literature.
  10. The learner will classify the characteristics of social disconnectedness and how it applies to characters in literature.
  11. The learner will use the rhetorical triangle to analyze poems and short stories.
  12. The learner will write thesis statements that apply to a larger theme and not intended for a traditional five paragraph essay.
  13. The learner will write thesis statements that follow the claim, direction, connection format.
  14. The learner will properly support quotes which they use as evidence in their essays either through embedded quotes or explanation of quotes following the quote.
  15. The learner will proofread both their own and other student’s papers to ensure standard grammar, usage, and mechanics as well as logical progression of the paper and quotes that are significant and supported.
  16. The learner will extend reading vocabulary.
  17. The learner will evaluate and revise individual assignments, peer assignments, and writing samples for various grammar, punctuation, and structure problems.

2nd Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will practice various ways to combine sentences and practice using various sentence structures in their writing.
  2. The learner will construct, and then evaluate through the literature, an understanding of the nature of honesty and deception.
  3. The learner will develop and practice careful reading techniques so that they can more readily use evidence from a text to interpret ideas, recognize relationships, and validate judgments.
  1. The learner will analyze the characteristics of the Victorian era in England.
  2. The learner will construct, and then evaluate through the literature, an understanding of injustice, human existence, and how these things often work together in literature.
  3. The learner will construct, and then evaluate through the literature, an understanding of why and how wars and rebellions are used in literature.
  4. The learner will identify the elements that accompany British humor and create British humor of their own.

3rd Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will correctly label the rhyme scheme in poems.
  2. The learner will compare and contrast symbols, meanings, and themes of poems.
  3. The learner will practice using context clues to decode unfamiliar words for college level poetry and prose passages.
  4. The learner will be able to identify and interpret the meaning behind the shift/contrast in poems.
  5. The learner will define, identify, and use various poetic terms such as alliteration, diction, imagery, parallel syntax, metaphor, and extended metaphor.
  6. The learner will identify different poetic forms and different types of poetry.
  7. The learner will write a poem which mimics the form and style of other poets.
  8. The learner will define, recall, and use vocabulary for the AP Test at an 80% pass rate.
  9. The learner will create a research topic and write a research paper using MLA format.
  10. The learner will demonstrate close reading of prose, poetry, and AP questions.
  11. The learner will demonstrate the ability to consistently score a 6 or higher on practice AP essays written in 40 minutes.
  12. The learner will demonstrate the ability understand and write AP multiple choice questions and answer AP multiple choice questions at a 60% rate for in class practice.
  13. The learner will develop an understanding of various themes in literature.
  14. The learner will defend the relevance, brilliance, and literary quality of poems to their classmates.
