1st Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will define, identify and use various poetic terms such as simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, etc.
  2. The learner will write original poems.
  3. The learner will be able to define, identify, create, and discuss foreshadowing in various works of literature.
  4. The learner will properly use the correct word (Your/you’re, assent/ascent, etc) for the sense of the sentence in all written work.
  5. The learner will compare and contrast various literary elements (plot, setting, characters, etc.) within and among various works of literature.
  6. The learner will extend reading vocabulary.
  7. The learner will evaluate and revise individual assignments, peer assignments, and writing samples for various grammar, punctuation, and structure problems.
  8. The learner will be able to define, identify, and avoid using plagiarism. 
  9. The learner will be able to properly cite research sources for a works cited page in MLA format.
  10. The learner will be able to present oral summaries and/or analysis of material read or viewed.
  11. The learner will use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature. 
  12. The learner will define, identify, and use various literary terms such as point of view, characterization, conflict, dialect, etc.
  13. The learner will be able to define, identify, interpret, and differentiate between the major types of irony: dramatic, situational, and verbal.
  14. The learner will be able to define, identify, and create the five major elements of a short story: plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme.
  15. The learner will define, identify, and demonstrate the proper use of the 7 parts of speech.
  16. The learner will punctuate sentences properly.
  17. The learner will practice various ways of combining sentences. 
  18. The learner will choose the correct pronoun case foe the sense of the sentence.
  19. The learner will select the writing sample that uses dialogue correctly and will properly use dialogue in writing. 

2nd Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will evaluate passages and statements to determine if they are fact or opinion.
  2. The learner will successfully write complete sentences using correct vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  3. The learner will construct answers to essay questions in paragraph form.
  4. The learner will demonstrate comprehension through note taking and summarizing.
  5. The learner will define and give examples of the monomyth, allegory, and archetypes in literature.  
  6. The learner will properly write an in-text citation in MLA format.
  7. The learner will read independently for personal enjoyment.
  8. The learner will increase fluency in oral reading and apply strategies for decoding unfamiliar words.
  9. The learner will write descriptively.
  10. The learner will correctly use, punctuate, and cite paragraphs using direct quotes, summaries, or paraphrases of researched material using MLA format.
  11. The learner will evaluate future careers through a research paper.
  12. The learner will proofread written assignments to ensure standard grammar, usage, and mechanics.
  13. The learner will read research for their papers and adapt what they have read into appropriate research. 
  14. The learner will analyze the characteristics of the Renaissance/Elizabethan era in England to help develop an understanding of the culture of Shakespeare’s time.
  15. The learner will practice combining sentences in various ways.
