1st Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1.  {The learner will read and become familiar with prehistoric France and the art and monuments left from that time
  2. The learner will realize that France is a peninsula of Asiatic Europe and that Europe is really simply a part of Asia
  3. The learner will read and understand where France’s borders are {mountain ranges, rivers, oceans, bordering countries}
  4. The learner will read about and come to a broad understanding of France’s ancient provinces and how these have influenced France’s departments today {i.e., names, borders, agriculture, literature}
  5. The learner will review the irregular verb avoir in both the present indicative and in the affirmative and negative imperative forms and will review common expressions that use this verb
  6. The learner will review the irregular verb être in both the present indicative and in the affirmative and negative imperative forms and will review common expressions that use this verb
  7. The learner will review the irregular verb aller in both the present indicative and in the affirmative and negative imperative forms and will review common expressions that use this verb; students will also revisit verbs that can be used to avoid the overuse of aller in speaking and writing
  8. The learner will review the irregular verb faire in both the present indicative and in the affirmative and negative imperative forms and will review common expressions that use this verb
  9. The learner will become familiar with the terms depuis, il y a, voilà, and pendant to show expression of time (i.e., duration)
  10. The learner will transition into the “immersion” aspect of the Honors level course {i.e., reading in French, papers in French, conversation in French}
  11. Through reading of French history in the target language, the learner will become familiar with French history and early literature from 500 B.C. through the year 1066.
  12. The learner will read excerpts from Julias Caesar’s De Bello Gallico in order to become familiar with Druidism as it was practiced in France.
  13. Through reading <<Le Vase de Soissons>> by Gregoire de Tours and through the reading of Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, the learner will become familiar with the Gaul chief of the Franks Vercingétorix and his important role in the future development of France as a country.
  14. The learner will review the three major verb families (-er, -ir,-re) as well as verbs ending in -oir in both the present and imperative forms.
  15.  The learner will demonstrate proper placement of adverbs in French sentences.
  16. The student will read an excerpt from <<La Chanson de Roland>> (c. 1100, author unknown).
  17. The learner will read an excerpt from <<Tristan et Yseut>> (c. 1170, probably authored by Marie de France).
  18. The learner will revisit usage of the passé compose, the imperfect, and the passé simple, demonstrating an understanding of when each past tense is used in French and when and how past participles must show agreement in French past tense communication.
  19. The learner will demonstrate an understanding of how to use past perfect tense.

2nd Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. The learner will become familiar with important people and events of the last centuries of the Middle Ages in France through historical readings/discussions in the target language.
  2. The learner will read an anonymous French play entitled La Farce de Maître Pathelin (written in 1464).
  3. The learner will read the François Villon poem entitled La Ballade des pendus>>.
  4. The learner will practice proper formation and usage of direct and indirect object pronouns.
  5. The learner will practice proper usage of disjunctive pronouns.
  6. The learner will review the most highly used verbs of communication in the French language (to include proper conjugation as well as their order when used with infinitives).
  7. The learner will review the imperative form (in both affirmative and negative use), including use of the imperative with direct object pronouns.
  8. The learner will review and practice placement of subject/object/disjunctive pronouns when used in conjunction.
  9. The learner will demonstrate understanding of regular subjunctive formation in the French language in both the present and the past tenses.
  10. The learner will memorize the irregular conjugated forms of the French subjunctive.
  11. The learner will demonstrate the ability to use the subjunctive correctly in French, including the knowledge of when to use an infinitive instead of the subjunctive.
  12. The learner will read about 17th century French history in order to glean a broad overview of the époque.
  13. The learner will become familiar with 17th century French writers, including playwrights and with the Académie française.
  14. The learner will read and watch plays by the French playwright Molière, the father of modern comedy.
  15.  The learner will become familiar with Molière’s method of writing known as his <<procédés>>.
  16. The learner will compare Molière’s works with today’s situational comedy.
