Media Concepts A

  • Conduct safety inspection and properly report problems with the room or equipment, and correctly report problems for repair.

  • Take personal positions on basic ethical issues that confront the media business, such as whether it is appropriate to videotape people without their knowledge, whether it is appropriate to adjust content to skew a story, etc.

  • Demonstrate good team behaviors including Active Learning skills, non-blameful I-language skills, and basic planning skills.

  • Contribute effectively in a business storyboard Creative Meeting.

  • Properly set up camera for recording to include mounting, hookups, white balance, and protection of the equipment and make basic adjustments to the lens including focus, iris, and filter.

  • Recognize and apply camera actions including pan, tilt, truck, zoom, wide shot, full shot, medium shot, and close up.

  • Make shot choices that are interesting, appealing, and suitably framed using the Rule of Thirds.

  • Identify video recording formats including DVCPro, standard DV, mini-DV, S-VHS, and VHS, and describe differences in their picture quality, cost, features, and best uses.

  • Operate within an environment structured after current media industry standards.

  • Categorize the roles and responsibilities of various members of a production team.

  • Examine and evaluate the duties and requirements of each member of a production team.

  • Assess the demographics of the target audience to be served.

  • Collect and analyze demographic data from the service area.

  • Select the content that is most appropriate for the target audience.

  • Construct the script and necessary materials for a media presentation.

  • Choose a format that is suited to the needs and desires of the target audience.

  • Organize and assemble the various components of the production.

  • Determine the most effective and cost-efficient location for the presentation/production.

  • Calculate the total cost of the production including time, personnel, location, and equipment.

  • Examine various funding methods for the media industry.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of advertising.

  • Design and illustrate an advertising sales campaign.

  • Distinguish public from commercial funding sources.

  • Debate the appropriateness of proposed content for a public media entity versus private media entity.

  • Prepare a budget for a specified production or publication.

  • Estimate cost for a production or publication to be completed.

  • Design a promotional campaign.

  • Create a promotional event for a funding source.

  • Evaluate local, state, and national laws, policies, and procedures regarding personal rights, interviewing, pictures, or identifying issues.

  • Demonstrate professional conduct and code of ethics around issues such as but not limited to copyright, use of materials taken form the Internet, and privacy.

  • Analyze and compare media release forms, contracts, and permits.
