Physical Science A

Safety, Tools & Techniques of Science

  • Identify the equipment and skills used in science.

Structure and Properties of Matter

  • Identify a substance as a compound or mixture and the type of bonds involved.

  • Distinguish between volume, shape, and particle arrangement in the four phases of matter.

  • Distinguish the difference between elements, compounds, solutions, colloids, and suspensions.

  • Identify an element as a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid using the periodic table and give its subatomic information.

  • Identify the parts of an atom and their characteristics.

  • Identify common element symbols and distinguish information from compound formulas.

  • Calculate density, given volume and mass.

Interactions of Matter

  • Classify mixtures as heterogeneous or homogeneous.

  • Identify physical or chemical changes of matter.

  • Classify and balance chemical equations.

  • Identify the parts and characteristics of a solution.

  • Identify endothermic and exothermic reactions from temperature changes.

  • Classify acidic, basic, and neutral substances solutions by their ion concentrations.

  • Identify acidic, basic, and neutral substances using indicators.

  • Predict the affects of pressure, temperature, or volume on the behavior of gases.

  • Explain the law of conservation of mass through chemical reactions.

  • Compare temperature scales and the freezing and boiling point of water in each scale.

  • Compare heat, temperature, conduction, convection, radiation, and calculate thermal energy.

Physical Science B

Force and Motion

  • Distinguish between mass, weight, speed, and velocity.

  • Interpret distance-time graphs for velocity and calculate velocity given distance and time.

  • Calculate acceleration given velocity and time.

  • Relate inertia, force, or action-reaction forces to Newton's three laws of motion.

  • Calculate force given mass and acceleration.

  • Identify simple machines and those that make up complex machines.

Energy

  • Relate the affects of gravity on the motion of falling bodies, ocean tides, and satellites.

  • Calculate power or work given force, distance, and time.

  • Examine the law of conservation of momentum.

  • Classify and identify the parts of transverse and longitudinal waves.

  • Determine wavelength given frequency and amplitude.

  • Identify the characteristics of sound and light.

  • Identify wave reflection, diffraction, refraction, and interference.

  • Calculate wave speed given frequency and wavelength.

  • Identify the parts of an electric circuit and compare series and parallel circuits.

  • Utilize Ohm's Law to calculate voltage, resistance, or amperes.

  • Compare nuclear fission and fusion.
