Reading

Reading is of highest importance throughout the first grade year. We strive to help each child become an independent reader and to build a foundation for a life long love of reading. These skills are built through the use of poetry, shared reading, Guided Reading, and phonics. A highlight in reading is Young Author’s Day. This day is a celebration of literacy that incorporates reading and writing skills practiced throughout the year. Prior to this day, the students create and publish their own stories. On this day, students share their published works and visit a variety of literacy centers.

Math

Math skills include addition, subtraction, time, measurement, money, and geometry. Students enjoy a daily math problem that enhances higher level thinking skills.

Units

Some of the favorite areas of study for first graders are weather, machines, organisms, space, Native Americans, maps, and the human body.

First grade is a nurturing environment where students are gently encouraged to reach their greatest growth potential within this important year.
