INTRODUCTION
We have an "active learning" program in the 2nd grade at Grassland. In
this way we hope to make school interesting, and to meet individual needs.
SCIENCE
The Science Curriculum covers life cycles with an emphasis on raising
butterflies through their entire life cycle; lifting heavy things,
balancing and weighing.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies covers the time period 1607 (Jamestown) through 1776 in American
history. We have a special day in October called Pioneer Day, and this is
a hands-on day of pioneer activities held at Mrs. Williams' home. We study
map skills all year. We study Abraham Lincoln, George Washington,
and Martin Luther King, Jr., and American symbols. Junior Achievement
(when available) enhances our study on communities.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Our reading program includes the Accelerated Reader program and the McGraw Hill
series. We have small group reading sessions that include books on some of
the subjects in our curriculum. We do varied activities across the
curriculum. English is taught through varied writing activities. We
also use music and games to teach English skills. We are initiating the Four
Block Reading Program which includes Guided Reading, Self Selected Reading (AR),
Working with Words (Phonics and Word Wall), and a Writing block.
MATH
Second graders build math skills in many ways. Manipulative objects are
used with most lessons so our second graders see and understand mathematical
concepts as they problem solve. Many children need concrete examples
before pencil and paper activities have true meaning for them. Learning
real-life math skills, such as counting money, making change, measuring, and
telling time, enables our children to see the relevance of math in our day to
day lives. Higher order thinking skills and problem solving strategies are
emphasized in such a way that learning occurs far "beyond the book."
