Third grade is an exciting leap into the upper elementary grades! It is
a time of gaining more independence and independent thinking. This is
the age where responsibility begins to shift from parent to child in
small steps.
We cover many subject areas. In reading, we encourage reading to develop
into chapter books during this year. They are given an opportunity to
read silently during school hours. We also cover many skills that
include inferencing, context clues, cause and effect, critical thinking,
summarizing, sequencing, and many others. All of these skills are
developed in order to strengthen reading comprehension and the love of
reading.
Language is continued and fostered through sentence and paragraph
development. Parts of speech are learned along with the writing process.
Creative writing is strongly encouraged. By the end of the third grade
year, each child will be using cursive handwriting in each subject.
Math is explosive in third grade! Multiplication is crucial to the third
grade math curriculum. Many other skills depend on multiplication. We
also review addition and subtraction with regrouping. We learn about
place value, ordinals, division, and fractions. This is just a sampling
of the third grade math curriculum.
In science, we are using a hands-on approach to learning through the
Science and Technology for Children Program. The four major areas of
study are plants, sound, rocks and minerals, and chemical tests. We
encourage data collection and observation through the science process.
During the third grade year in social studies, we continue the study of
communities throughout the world. We emphasize map and globe usage.
Third grade is an awesome grade! It is amazing to watch the maturity of
the child blossom!!
