Fifth Grade Curriculum Overview

Extensive information about fifth grade county wide curriculum can be found at: www.wcs.edu.

Language Arts
Spelling - We use the spelling practice book from the McGraw-Hill Reading Series.

Vocabulary – We study words from the reading series, spelling series, writing, novel ties, social studies, science, and math. We also use Wordly Wise vocabulary development.

Grammar – We incorporate grammar lessons form the Silver Burdett English series, Daily Oral Language, and the grammar practice book from McGraw-Hill Reading.

Writing – Students write through journals and writing prompts, as well as through the reading textbook.

Reading – Students develop a variety of reading skills through novel studies; trade books based on themes, the McGraw-Hill reading series, and Accelerated Reader.

Math – Math is taught through the Silver Burdett Ginn, and Glencoe math series.

Science – The students study floating and sinking, motion and design, ecosystems, and micro-worlds through STC kits. Other units covered are populations and ecosystems, the solar system, the solid earth, and light and sound. Scott Foresman and Silver Burdett Ginn are the texts used.

Social Studies - Students focus on a sequential history of the United States, map skills, U.S. Government, African-American studies, and presidents of the U.S.
