Grassland Elementary Pride

Grassland Elementary School pride runs deep as it abounds with 125 years of educational history. Our present facility opened in August of 1992. and it is home to more than seven hundred children.

Grassland Elementary students have consistently tested in the top percentiles in the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program. Students are actively engaged with hands-on learning opportunities, and students and teachers are highly enthusiastic and eager to learn together.  Our teachers average 17 years of experience, and they are consistently involved in job embedded professional development in order to increase student growth. In addition, before and after school tutoring conducted by Grassland teachers is available for all students in order to help students meet individual academic needs.

At Grassland, we are proud of our strong efforts to provide integrated technology throughout the curriculum.  Grassland has a 27-station Dell computer lab, a fully equipped portable laptop lab, and each classroom has five networked workstations. Numerous software programs are available for all students, and a technology teacher works directly with students on a daily basis and serves as a tech coach to classroom teachers.

Ongoing parent-teacher communication is essential for your child’s success.
The parent support group for our school is the Grassland School Community Association (GSCA). GSCA provides all families with numerous opportunities for involvement through volunteering and support of fund raising efforts.

Our Library/Media Center is staffed by a full time library media specialist and a library assistant. The Media Center is centrally located within the school and houses the print and non-print collection which supplements and enriches the academic curriculum. The Media Center continually promotes the enjoyment of literature and the use of informational skills through various programs and activities.

Grassland Elementary has a full time School Counselor who meets regularly with each classroom to teach and reinforce skills such as how to get along with friends, how to solve conflict, and other school-related issues. Our counselor meets throughout the year with small groups addressing specific common concerns and is  available to work individually with students and meet with parents.

Our Physical Education Program utilizes the Prudential FITNESSGRAM as a tool to assess a young person's fitness level.  This program was developed by the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research and is endorsed by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.  In addition, Grassland is participating in the statewide WalkingWorks for Schools program in order to enhance our students’ overall health and fitness.

Grassland Elementary has an active art program that introduces students to many types of art and various artists. The success of this program can be viewed along Grassland hallways as student art is showcased for all to appreciate.

Our Music Program provides weekly instruction for all students.  Performances, song writing, experiences with musical instruments, and the study of artists and culture are all part of the program.

Many exciting events and programs take place throughout the year at Grassland Elementary School including 4H, Junior Achievement, Exchange City (5th grade), Fall Fun & Fitness Fest, Talent Show, Scouts and Destination Imagination.  Our Clubs include Knitting, Art, Runner’s, Science and Chess.

We believe ongoing parent-teacher communication is essential for each child's success. The parent support group for our school is the Grassland School Community Association.  This group provides all families with numerous opportunities for involvement through volunteering and support of GES.
