GMS CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

 

 

Note:  Students should pay close attention to WGMS morning announcements for information regarding specific dates and times for each activity

 

Destination Imagination 

Any student who wishes to foster creative thinking and problem solving skills may participate in Destination Imagination.  During the annual competitions, students will solve problems in a variety of areas; a central challenge prepared in advance and an instant challenge which is an unknown element.  Through problem solving, students learn lifelong skills such as working with others as a team, evaluating ideas, making decisions, and creating solutions while also developing self-confidence and presentation skills.  Season begins in October with tournaments in March, April, & May (Global Finals).  Sponsor:  Jennifer Alldredge

 

Drama Club

Drama club is open to all students at GMS.  In Drama Club,  students learn about various aspects of theatre arts both acting on the stage as well as behind-the-scenes activities.  This study culminates in a major spring musical theatre production.  Sponsors:   Jennifer Keith and Will Lambert

 

Duke University and John Hopkins University Talent Search

Seventh and eighth grade students with one or more TCAP composite scores at the 95th percentile or higher are invited to participate in these Talent Search Programs.  Materials are mailed home and a parent information meeting is held in the fall of each school year.  Students register to take the ACT (7th) and/or the SAT (8th) college entrance exams at local high schools.  After school test prep classes are offered at GMS prior to winter break (SAT) and in January (ACT).  Participant benefits include practice for college admissions tests prior to high school, award ceremonies (local and national), summer program options and inclusion on the Duke and Johns Hopkins talent search mailing lists for other enrichment opportunities and high school/college information.  Sponsor:  Mary Farrell

 

FCA 

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a club that is led by Grassland athletes but is open to the entire student body.  It is a time for students to join together to support each other in their Christian walk.  We meet every Wednesday morning in the library at 7:00 a.m.  FCA begins in September and goes through the school year.

Film Club 

Film Club is for Students that wish to participate in making videos and presentations to use in school related activities. It meets only when needed. Listen for announcements for specifics on meeting times.

Forensics Team

Forensics is a competitive speech and drama program.  This program appeals to all interest levels from improvisational acting to speeches to interpretative acting.   Sponsors:  Jennifer Alldredge & Jennifer Keith

 

Model UN 

Model UN is sponsored by the YMCA.  Its purpose is to help students understand and relate to international issues, to develop speaking skills and self-confidence.  Model UN tries to educate and develop debate skills in international issues and to develop awareness that “Democracy must be learned by each generation”.  It is open to 7th and 8th grade students.  It begins in September and culminates in December.  Sponsor: Dennis Pate

 

 

 

National Junior Honor Society 

GMS is a charter member of the National Council of the National Junior Honor Society.  The Society promotes character, scholarship, leadership, service and citizenship.  Students who are members will achieve that status by completing an application for membership.  Applications will be made available in the fall.  Membership is limited to 7th and 8th grade students.  A “B” average is needed to achieve and maintain membership status.  Sponsor:  Nicole Smith

 

Newspaper Staff

The school newspaper is designed to showcase the efforts of the GMS students who like to write,  report and be creative.  Any student is eligible to be on the newspaper staff.  The paper staff will cover one issue every nine weeks with the last issue being the really “big one”, because it will include the Eighth Grade class favorites and Last Will and Testament section.  The meetings will be announced on a weekly basis.

Peppers 

Peppers is a Pep Squad open to all girls in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.  Peppers encourages school spirit and responsibility through extra curricular activity.  Information is made available during late September to all students wishing to join Peppers.  Sponsor:  Ruth Cleary

 

STARS Executive Council 

The SEC is open to all students who wish to be leaders in our S.T.A.R.S. program (Students Taking A Right Stand).  All those who wish to join the SEC will be asked to complete an application with teacher recommendations.  Students in the SEC will be selected by the STARS Counselor and the SEC sponsor.  The SEC will attend a training seminar in mid-October to learn how to become excellent peer mediators and the will also complete two service projects during the year.  Sponsors:  Melanie Sakarapanee & Tessa Gillespie

 

Student Council 

Elected representatives from each grade level conduct fall food drive, decorate for school dances, advertise for Spirit Week, and a variety of other student activities. Elections are held in mid-September.

Variety Show

Any student who would like to share their special talent in drama, singing, acting and instrumental music is welcome to try out for the annual GMS Variety Show.  Tryouts will be held in March and the show is held the last day of school in May.  There is a preview show for parents in the evening usually a day or so before the last day of school.  Sponsor:  Russ Keller

 

WGMS 

WGMS is our very own announcement program at GMS.  Any students who are interested and feel comfortable in enhancing their public speaking skills can join the staff of WGMS.  Each morning the staff will air LIVE the daily announcements to all homeroom classes.  Please see Mr. Clark for more information.

Yearbook Staff     

An announcement is made during the first month of school for anyone wishing to be on the staff.  Students will fill out a questionnaire and teacher feedback will be part of the selection process.  Ten to fifteen students will be selected by the sponsors.  Sponsors: Catherine Crist & Kendra Brooks

 

Youth Legislature 

The Youth in Government Program, Youth Legislature, which is sponsored by the YMCA is available to all students.  This program takes place in the spring.  Students work in groups of 2 to 3 to write legislation and work towards its passage in a Model Legislature held in the House and Senate Chambers of the Tennessee State Capitol.  Sponsors:   Joe Marley & Russ Keller
