In the fall, the Parents' Club sends home Volunteer sheets listing many ways in which
you may help at GMS, behind the scenes in the office or classroom or more active roles in
some cases. The following is a sample:
Some are on-going, year-round activities, such as:
Parents Advisory Council (PAC) Committee Member, including:
Parent Issues, Community Relations, Extracurricular Support, and / or Academic
Support
Destination Imagination Coach
Students Taking a Right Stand (STARS) Leader or Assistant
Junior Achievement Leader or Assistant
Special Interest Club Leader or Assistant
Photography or videotaping special events
Outdoor Classroom or Lawn & Garden Assistant (mainly spring and fall)
Other activities are limited, one-time commitments, such as:
Copying and collating Directory (Sept)
5th Grade Open House (planning in Dec-Jan; event in late Jan)
Book Fair (Feb)
Contribute "stuff" for giveaways at Celebrations, assemblies, incentives,
etc.
Entertainment for assemblies, programs, Celebrations, etc.
STARS picnic (May)
Computer help, esp. word processing and/or spreadsheets
Tutors
Project teams including (not limited to): Dress code review,
Art room assistants
Teen Living assistants
Special Ed assistants, including Recording Books on Tape
Individual teachers ask for help with Odd jobs, field trips, Field Day, and projects
during the year
General office help, including covering phones during assemblies,
copying/collating/mailing newsletters, etc.
Resource speaker (could involve professional or educational interests, hobbies,
etc. For example, someone who works at Saturn might be able to share about team and
cooperative work styles. Greek Day. . . Medieval Fair . . . Tennessee History
projects. . . prep for ACT/SAT tests . . . whatever! )
Hospitality Functions are a HUGE part of parental involvement at any school:
Friday morning refreshments for teachers (year-round)
Open Houses for new school year (Sept)
Band Concerts (Dec - April)
5th Grade Open House (Jan)
Teacher Appreciation Week (May)
End of Year Teachers Luncheon (May) & (you guessed it!) Beginning of Year
Teachers Luncheon (August)
Celebrations (last day of each grading period)
