WCS Mission
To cultivate the ability,
intellect, and character of each student.
WCS Vision
The Williamson County
Schools is a student-centered, academically
enriching district that supports the collaborative
educational efforts of students, teachers, staff and
community.
Second Grade
Reading
During the year, we will be using a reading textbook as well as supplementing
with chapter books and guided reading groups. We have found that the students enjoy a variety of reading
materials. Some
skills emphasized are vocabulary, comprehension, creative writing, main idea and
prediction. Accelerated Reading will be an option for students.
Spelling
Spelling lists will come home on Monday.
The list will consist of twenty words. Test will be given each Friday and
will include some dictation.
English
English is also connected to the reading series. We will
work with parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and
pronouns; punctuation; and capitalization.
Math
During the year we will work on basic addition and subtraction facts, fractions,
geometry, money, time, place value and problem solving. Later in the year
we will begin multiplication. A record will be kept of each child's
progress on timed math facts which will be given during the week. One good
way to help your child is by using flashcards (either purchased or
homemade). These are the basic facts that the children will use daily, and
memorization now not only makes the children more successful in each grade
level, but increases their self-confidence.
Science
The students learn and retain facts when they do hands-on activities. We
will be using STC science modules. The first kit, "Life Cycle of the Butterfly", will
begin in August. The three other units will be Soils, Balancing and
Weighing, and Changes.
Social Studies
The focus in Social Studies will be on maps and globes, communities, government,
national symbols and early American history with pioneers and Indians.
