Third Grade
The focus in third grade is
RESPONSIBILITY.
Teachers and parents work
together to create students who have their work and supplies ready each
day and who accept the consequences of their actions. Math is very
important this year, as well. Students will learn multiplication,
division, fractions, decimals, and problem solving. Students will be
expected to study multiplication and division facts until they are
mastered. This is a vitally important skill. In Science, we study the
scientific process, rocks and minerals, the solar system, weather,
forces and motion, energy and matter, sound, chemical testing, and
living things. For social studies we focus on map skills, types of
communities, government, cultures and traditions, Native Americans, and
Tennessee history. Our reading program emphasizes the study of various
genres. Reading skills will focus on a variety of strategies that will
enable students to increase both their comprehension and fluency. Many
hands-on projects will be assigned this year. They are designed to
foster creativity and develop presentation skills. Third grade is a year
with many transitions and new concepts, but it is a lot of fun, too!
