Fourth Grade
Science -
We use four different science kits during the year to support the topics that we
study. The kits are animal studies, land and water, electricity, and
levers and pulleys. Other topics of study include: the scientific method,
forms of energy,
magnetism, properties of matter, geosphere and weather, living things, cells,
and forces & motion.
Social Studies -
Fourth grade Social Studies covers American history from early man to the cause of the Civil War.
Main topics include: Native Americans, explorers, colonies, American Revolution, Tennessee
history, map skills, and geography.
Math - Some
of the concepts we study include: multiple-digit
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, place value, geometry,
fractions, decimals, metric and standard measurement, using data, probability,
and time.
Reading - We focus on
teaching reading with a balanced literacy approach. This may include the
use of several chapter books as novel studies, unit studies, the
basal reader, vocabulary study, leveled guided reading books, and independent
reading.
Language Arts - Fourth
graders are responsible for know what the following are and how they are used: subject, predicate,
nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, articles, possessive nouns, quotation marks, punctuation, capitalization,
dictionary, thesaurus.
Writing- While following
the writing process, we study the 4 types of sentences,
metaphors, similes, while creating descriptive,
persuasive, and narrative writing, and poetry.
Spelling- Words used for
spelling lists are frequently used words, story
vocabulary, or follow specific phonetic or pattern rules.
