What can you do at home to help your child with reading?

  • The single most important way to help your child develop a
love of reading is to read aloud to your child.  Try to read
aloud at least 15 minutes each day to your child.

  • As you are reading with your child, encourage him/her to
ask questions about what they are reading.  Ask questions
about why the characters do things.  Help your child see how
he/she is like a character in the book.

  • To help your child read more fluently, give them opportunities
to read aloud at home.  Children can read recipes, read with
a sibling or a parent, etc.

  • Establish a family reading hour

  • Take regular trips to the library

  • Write notes to your children and leave them around them house
for them to find and read

What can you do at home to help your child manage her time well?

  • Be a good role model.
  • Have your child keep her own calendar to outline upcoming due
    dates for tests and projects.
  • Make sure that your child is using an assignment notebook to keep
track of assignments.  Check things off as they are finished.
  • Let your child take an occasional break to do a few short stretching
exercises or something else physical.  This will make them more alert
    and better able to concentrate.
  • Use a kitchen timer to help your child stay focused.
  • Let your child experience the consequences of poor time management.

How can I help my child get organized for homework?

  • Make a place for school stuff at home
  • Designate a study spot that is well lit, quiet, comfortable, neat, and well
    supplied
  • Have a regular study time
