Without a doubt the best
baseball season in the history of Independence high
school has been this season. The Eagles showed up this
year to surprise many that they could be one of the top
teams in the state of Tennessee. Wednesday morning, the
Eagles had to pull out a win against Collierville to
continue the dream season and reach their ultimate goal
of playing for the state championship. With a district
and region champions in their pockets already from this
season, all was looking good for such a run in state
playoffs. However, a loss to the Dragons Wednesday would
send the Eagles home and only still dreaming of that
state championship. Throughout the district and region
playoffs it would be the Eagles that would get the
strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting.
Wednesday morning's game versus Collierville found
Independence on the other side of the ball this time.
The Eagles committed five errors in the game and gave up
eleven runs on nine hits. For the Eagles offense, they
finally scored in the fifth inning and only managed to
produce four hits in the game. For the Eagles, the loss
sends them back home without their ultimate goal being
accomplished but they did set a high standard for teams
in the future to beat. The 2009 season saw the Eagles
win more games than ever, district 11-AAA champions and
Region 6-AAA champions and a push in the state
championship tournament. The bar has been set high by
the '09 team and those teams that follow will have a lot
to live up to and defend. Congratulations Eagles on a
tremendous season and all the best to the seniors from
this team that now enter a new part of their lives.
