The 2009 Independence Tennis team is having its most
memorable season in school history. Coach Balzer gives you
the main information as to how and where our Eagles will be
competing in the post season.
Coach Balzer
Notes from the Season and Post Season Seeding:
"I wanted to
update everyone on the tennis team. We have had a good
season this year and we head into the post season starting
Wednesday April 29th."
The girls have
completed the best season in school history finishing 3rd
in the toughest district in the state. Before this year the
highest they have placed was 5th. Last Friday
they took on Franklin missing our number two player Jordan
Jaszcz. Everybody had to play up and they all played
great. What would have been a tough match with Jordan came
down to the last doubles match with Shyan Escobar and
Kaleigh McCoy winning putting Independence ahead 5-4 for the
day. We finished the year with a 9-3 record.
Some Individual Stats of note:
Hayley Mull went undefeated in the district at no 3 – 4
singles and lost only once in non district ending with an
11-1 record. Liz Renzaglia playing at 4-5 singles lost only
once in district play and went 10-2 overall on the season.
In the district tournament Hayley Mull is playing Singles
and is seeded 3. Shyan Escobar is our other singles player
for the tournament. In Doubles Brooke Young and Jordan
Jaszcz are the 4th seed. Kaleigh McCoy and Liz
Renzaglia are also playing doubles in the tournament.
On the guys side "We had a
roller coaster season. We played tough but finished out the
year with a 4-8 record. Michael Dunn and Jay Perry are one
of the most dominant doubles teams. They finished the
season with a 6-3 mark. They make a great team and are a
dark horse in the district tournament” according to Coach
Balzer.
Also, of note are Sophomores
Jake Turner and Graham Carney. Before the season they had
never played a match of competitive tennis and they have
become very good in the short amount of time that they have
been playing. "They are going to be players to watch in the
future" says Coach Balzer. In the district tournament Perry
and Dunn are seeded #3. Jake Turner and Brendan Foti are
also playing doubles for Independence.
In singles,
Nathan Nelson has a tough first round match against the # 5
player in the Nation, and three time defending state
Champion Ian Chadwell. Graham Carney is also playing
singles for Independence. |
