The 2008-09 Independence Eagles Wrestling season has
officially begun with a home match here last Tuesday against
Blackman High School. The Eagles begin their defense as the region's
top team and a new force in the state's wrestling programs. Last
year the Eagles were region 6 duals champions and the region's top
individual champions and they placed fourth overall at the state
duals. This season Coach Grindstaff and company are really looking
forward to another stellar season. Tuesday night, it look as if the
Eagles had not lost a step from last season's performance. The
Eagles team had a very impressive victory over Blackman defeating
them 44-16. According to Coach Grindstaff, "As an entire group, we
have areas for improvement, but all in all for the first match we
did pretty well." The Eagles took 9 out of 13 matches against a team
that is considered by most prognosticators as a top 5 team this
year in state.
