2009 State Championship Results

This past week the Independence wrestling team completed their 2008-2009 season.  Although things didn’t end the way the team and coaches had hoped, they still had their most successful season in the school’s history. Prior to this year Indy wrestling had three state placers (4th, 5th, and 6th in 2008) and a 16th place team finish at the Individual state tournament.  This season they finished 5th as a team and again had three medal winners but the place winners greatly improved from last year!  Two of our athletes placed 2nd , senior Chris Sinsheimer went 4-1 during the tournament and wrestled amazingly and sophomore Brennen Cox finished with the same record and also placed 2nd !  Those are our two highest placements at the tournament and we also had a 3rd place finisher, Seth Seneca.  Seth lost a heart breaker in the Quarterfinals but fought back all the way to capture the bronze medal.  All three student athletes did an outstanding job this past week and deserve everything they have achieved.  We had 11 wrestlers in the tournament and many had extremely tough match ups along the way.  Chase Beazley was a match away from getting his second state medal but ran into the #1 ranked wrestler before being eliminated.  "Along the way Chase wrestled very well and represented this school in a tremendous fashion throughout his entire IHS career" according to Coach Grindstaff.  Stephen King was also a match away from placing in this tournament and had a great senior year!  Thomas Berry and Taylor Dixon wrestled hard but only got in one match, losing in the first round which ultimately eliminated them from the tournament.  All of the kids are extremely tired from this season but I am sure they will make a speedy recovery as they report back to school today.  "I congratulate them on a wonderful season and wish them the best as they move onto bigger and better things," Coach Grindstaff.  "Thanks again to everyone for all their support this season and we will look forward to another great 2009-2010 season!"
