The 2009 State
Wrestling Duals are off to a great start for Independence. The
Eagles soundly defeated Collierville in the opening match. The
Eagles took that match 42-24. Austin Cox, Seth Seneca, Brennen Cox,
Chris Sinsheimer, Taylor Dixon, Stephen King, Christian Tambellini,
Aaron Overton, and Kevin Bratt all won their matches for the Eagles.
Then it was onto a traditional Tennessee state power in
wrestling and one of the favorites to win the state this year in
Soddy Daisy. When the smoke had cleared the Eagles would snag
victory by the most narrowest of margins, the Eagles pulled off the
upset with a 34-33 victory.
“I thought we wrestled with a lot more intensity in the second match
against Soddy,” Independence Coach Jared Grindstaff said. “It’s not
too hard to get pumped for Soddy because that’s such a great program
and power in this state. A win against them shows that even though
we’re only a five-year-old program, we’re building the foundations
of what we hope will be a power just like Soddy or Bradley.”
The victory would place the
Eagles into the Semi-finals where they would face off against this
decades' top wrestling program, Bradley Central. Bradley has
won five titles in this decade.
“We’ll be ready,” Grindstaff said. “It’ll be
our toughest challenge but these kids have faced tough challenges
all year and have done well so I don’t see why we can’t continue
that.” The Eagles would be a very tough opponent for Bradley
Central. Bradley would take the first two matches before Indy's Seth
Seneca would get the first victory for the Eagles in a 7-5 decision.
Chris Sinshiemer, Stephen King, Thomas Berry, Kevin Bratt and
Preston Beazley all won their matches against Bradley Central.
Bradley was even deducted one team point for misconduct, but it
would not be enough for the Eagles to overcome the top program in
the state. Bradley would hold onto the victory 31-26.
