12-13-05: Kroeger In San Diego

The bright lights and big city life found Independence's Kathy Kroeger at the Footlocker Cross Country Championship in San Diego. This was like no race she had ever participated in before. Jumbotrons show the runners’ progress and reporters from around the nation to write about the winners, the Foot Locker Cross Country championships in San Diego were obviously a big deal. It is no wonder that Kroeger, a Freshman was a little overwhelmed and nervous before the race.

Just one of four freshmen in the field of the nation’s 40 best female high school cross country runners, Kroeger finished in 16th place with a time of 17:57. The winner was also a freshman, Jordan Hasay of Mission College Prep in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

“I felt really fortunate to be able to go and compete in this race,” said Kroeger, the Class AAA champion who qualified by finishing fourth in the South Regional. “I ran as hard as I possibly could.”

Kroeger hopes the experience will be one of many in her next few years of high school competition.

“The level of competition is so incredibly high,” Kroeger said. “I am going to train even harder now so I can come back next year and do even better.” We believe that she will do just that. Congratulations to Kathy on her tremendous accomplishments this year.

11-26-05:Kroeger Finishes 4th @ Regionals

This just in...Saturday, at the Foot Locker Southeast Regionals in North Carolina Kathy Kroeger placed 4th by running a 5K race (farther than 3 mi. cross country) in 17 min. 16 seconds (faster than her best 3 mi. time)!  Kathy fell at the beginning of the race and was "trampled", but picked herself up and ran, coming in 4th with her best time ever.  This placing qualifies Kathy for the upcoming national competition in San Diego, California. Kathy's time placed her just 6 seconds behind the winner. Congratulations to Kathy Kroeger and her coach Coach Kristen Reames!

11-15-05: All - Metro Recognition

Congratulations to Dacey Fisher and Kathy Kroeger for making the AAA All-Metro team.  Kathy also won the runner of the year.  Elizha Burdette made the AAA second All-Metro team.  This is a huge honor for us since we are a second year school and up against many other schools with established running programs. IHS Cross Country coach, Kristen Reames, was voted Metro Girls AAA Coach of the Year.   A well deserved honor!!!

11-07-05: State Champion!!!

Independence's Freshman Kathy Kroeger has led the pack all year long in every race that she has run. Nothing different took place this past weekend as Kroeger claimed her first state championship at the Class AAA cross country title in 17:31 at the Percy Warner Park Steeplechase Course. Her nearest competition was Collierville’s Renae Vanwyhe, who finished 37 seconds behind.

“I was extremely nervous because this was my first time running in the state meet,” Kroeger said. “I just wanted to stay with the leaders and speed up at the end.”

"It was incredible!"  According to Coach Reames, Kathy set the new course record and state record with her time of 17:31.  Kroeger’s winning time would have tied a state meet course record set by Christy Baird of Knoxville West in 1996. However, due to the Steeplechase course being revamped this year with a new start location, all previous course records are now obsolete. That means Kroeger now holds the record for the new course.

Kathy is now ranked 1st in the State and 6th in the Nation!  She will now take her state championship title and compete at the prestigious Footlocker South Region Championships on Saturday, November 26th in Charlotte, NC.  Dacey had a great run and actually finished 50th out of 188.  We are looking forward to being there as a team next year!

This is the second state championship this year for Independence High School, the Girls golf team claimed the top spot just a couple of weeks ago.

10-28-05: Two Eagles Advance To State

The cross country team advances two to the State Meet!

  • Kathy Kroeger took 1st place at the Region 6 Championships today!
  • Dacey Fisher to 6th place and will advance to the state meet with Kathy!
  • Other notable finishes were Jordan Burdette 22nd and Alicia Burdette 29th

Kathy Kroeger’s time was within 3 seconds of the course record.  Several team members beat their personal best times.  Elijah Burdette missed going to state by 1 runner.

The state cross country meet is a week from tomorrow (Sat. Nov. 5) at 1:00 PM at Steeplechase.   Let’s all go and cheer our team on!

Steeplechase is on Hillsboro Road in Percy Warner… not far away!

10-27-05: Eagles Runners Set For Regionals

When the gun sounds today at the regional 6-AAA meet at steeplechase, hundreds of runners will cross the start line, however, only the top 10 finishers in each division, along with the top three teams (top four in Division II), will qualify for the state meet. Among those runners will be freshman sensation Kathy Kroeger of Independence High School. At the District 11 championships Kroeger posted one of the best times in state competition this year with a 17:56 finish. She will compete in the Region 6-AAA meet at the Steeplechase where she is the favorite. Recently, she was ranked second in the state and sixteenth in the country.

‘’She’s a natural,’’ Independence Coach Kristen Reames said. ‘’She’s an amazing athlete, but the neatest thing about her is she is so humble about it.’

All of us here at Independence wish Kathy and the whole team all the best at Regions and beyond. Go Eagles!

10-21-05: Eagles Perform Well at Metro

The Independence Eagles went to the Metro Cross Country Meet this past week. The boys team finished 18 out of 20 teams and the girls finished 10 out of 20 teams. Elizha Burdette led the boys team with a time of 17:34 and the girls leader was Kathy Kroeger with a time of 17:58.

The IHS Cross Country team will be going to Regionals next week at Steeplechase. Events begin at 1:00 and 1:45. For more information contact Coach Reames.
