National Honor Society Selection Process
The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization made up of students that exemplify outstanding accomplishments in the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS is open to juniors and seniors currently enrolled at IHS. If you are entering IHS with previous NHS membership, see section below.
Scholarship
The Independence High School chapter requires that you have a 3.75 cumulative grade point average. This meets the scholarship criteria for selection. You will not be ranked according to the GPA to determine whether or not you will be selected.
Leadership, Service,
& Character
These characteristics can be displayed both inside and outside of school. Involvement in co curricular and community activities help project these characteristics. You must complete and submit the attached Student Activity Information form in order to be considered for NHS. With the activity form, you must also submit two letters of reference. One of these letters should come from an educator or administrator that can testify to your having these characteristics. The second letter should come from someone in the community that has worked with you and can testify to your having these characteristics.
Selection
Each student interested in becoming a member of NHS must complete all of the components listed and submit them on a specified date in the fall semester. The Faculty Council will then select the students to be inducted into the society based on the forms and letters that are submitted. The Faculty Council may seek evaluations from other faculty to help determine whether or not a student displays the characteristics required. Selections will be announced at the beginning of the spring semester. Once selected by the faculty council, students will receive a letter of acceptance and be invited to attend an induction ceremony early in the spring semester. Students will be expected to uphold the ideals for which they were selected and continue on in their accomplishments.
Juniors who are not successful in the selection process because of scholarship, leadership or service may reapply in their senior year.
Selection process begins in November each year. GPAs are determined at the end of first semester.
