2008-2009 HEALTH SCREENINGS

In accordance with the state requirements of the WCS Coordinated School Health initiative, the district will once again be conducting school health screenings.  This includes regular screenings for students in kindergarten, second, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth grades and could also include a recommended screening, regardless of the child’s grade.  For example, if the teacher has a concern that a student is having trouble seeing the board, an eye screening would be recommended. 

Williamson County Schools views screenings as an important service provided to students.  With that in mind, the student will be screened unless the parent returns the screening letter sent from the school.  Please make sure a legible student's name and parent signature is on the letter being returned.  This letter was designed to be sent during the first week of school.  The initial deadline set for the parent to return this letter to the school is August 22, 2008.  If there are certain screenings parents do not want their child participating in and they have not seen or received this letter, they should contact the school immediately. 

Health screenings include: Blood Pressure, Height-Weight (BMI), Hearing, and Vision. 

For those students who are screened, parents will be notified by letter if their child scores outside a recommended screening range.  Then each parent can decide what, if any, information is shared with his or her child.  Please remember that screenings are only a tool, since there can be valid reasons a child scores outside the recommended range and may not be related to a health concern.  Screenings simply provide a general piece of information for the parent to determine whether or not there is a need for any follow-up questions and/or appropriate actions.
