WELCOME TO NOLENSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S

COUNSELOR CORNER

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

My name is Karen Thurgood and I’m the local counselor here.  I’m new to Tennessee, having just moved to the area with my family (husband, two kids, and a dog) from central Utah where I spent 20 years teaching business classes to high school and junior high students.  I have a BS degree in Business Education and a Masters Degree in Educational Counseling.

GUIDANCE COUNSELING

I believe Guidance Counseling is critical for students of all levels.  As a counselor at NES I am responsible to work with and for children in various capacities as listed below.

Ø      Teach guidance curriculum which includes three basic areas:

o       Academic Development – Students focus on how to succeed in school

o       Career Development – Students focus on their own skills and interests

o       Personal and Social Development – Students focus on getting along with others, setting goals, and safety issues

Ø      Counsel children individually

Ø      Conduct small group counseling sessions – topics may include, but are not limited to, self-esteem, divorce, grief

Ø      Consult with parents, teachers, and administrators

Ø      Coordinate GEIT procedures

Ø      Miscellaneous other tasks

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONTACT ME?

Many factors affect a child’s learning process.  Please contact me if you have concerns regarding your child’s progress whether it is academic, social, or emotional.  Some specific areas include:

v     Family changes (divorce, separation, moving, death in the family)

v     Home stress

v     Classroom behavior

v     Peer relations

v     Responsibility and accountability

v     Emotional well-being

I love working with students and my goal is to see them succeed.  I believe it is within the grasp of every student to be successful when they believe in themselves
