Support Your Child’s Reading Goals

 

Reading is an important skill that your child will be learning in his or her early education.  The checklists below identify the literacy skills your child will be learning in kindergarten.

Beginning Kindergarten Literacy

·        Identifies some letters of the alphabet

·        Writes his/her first name using upper-and lowercase letters

·        Recognizes some common sight words

·        Identifies rhyming words

·        Speaks using complete sentences

·        Repeats his/her full name, address, phone number, and birthday

·        Focuses on one activity independently or with a friend for up to ten minutes

·        Follows directions

·        Listens to a story without interrupting

 

End of Kindergarten Literacy

Reading and Writing

·        Recognizes and writes all of the letters of the alphabet (upper and lowercase)

·        Writes his/her first and last name

·        Identifies sounds corresponding to vowels and consonants

·        Can sound out words

·        Retells a story, including details

·        Puts events of a story in order

·        Writes simple sentences using sight words and phonics skills

Listening and Communication

·        Listens attentively

·        Raises hand and waits to speak

·        Follows and repeats spoken directions

·        Engages in dialogue

·        Relates stories, songs, or poems he or she hears to others

·        Focuses on the lesson being taught
