Oak View Elementary PTA Board Meeting

November 16, 2004

Call to Order:  Kim Harby called the meeting to order at 3:50 p.m.  Those in attendance said the Pledge of Allegiance.  Kim Harby asked everyone to review the October Minutes and after adequate time for review the Minutes were accepted without change by a motion from Lisa Richter and second by Elizabeth Petty.

Treasurer’s Report:  Lisa Richter reported that the beginning balance was not pulled into the total for the Profit and Loss Summary so the balance is off.  The Net Income should read $41,254.94.

Principal’s Report:  Denise Goodwin began by saying “thank you” to the PTA.  She then told the Board that TCAP testing has been time reduced from nine to five and one half hours.  She announced that Oak View passed in all categories.  Third, Fourth and Fifth were the grades in the “report card” and valued added coming out for only Fourth and Fifth grades.

Mrs. Goodwin stated that Polling went well.  She stated that we polled approximately 2,500 people which is well above the average of 500 people per polling place.  The exceptionally high number of voters this year should mean that the polling place will be moved for the next election.

Mrs. Goodwin also announced that she had a discussion with the Mayor regarding parking at Oak View and he has agreed to send a crew to review the parking situation in the near future.

Mrs. Goodwin further stated that The Lil’ Soldier toy drive program to benefit the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell is ready to begin just after Thanksgiving break.

Mrs. Goodwin explained the concept of “Quantum Learning” (strategies and techniques for making brain connections) to the Board and announced that on March 18th, one person will come to Oak View to work with our teachers.  He will bring information for the teachers to best meet the needs of the students here in Franklin at Oak View.  Miss. Shaw and Mrs. Rogers have been to a Quantum Learning class and reported it to be excellent training.  Mrs. Goodwin said she expects to see great results.

Whoo’s Into Reading:  Dana Graveno reminded the Board that January 7th is the first reward day for Whoo’s Into Reading this year and the theme will be “PJ Day”.  The PTA will provide cookies and punch.

Math Superstars:  Teresa Gresham reported that Math Superstars should have enough volunteers and that she is working on getting dates set with Mrs. Goodwin.  Teresa talked about rewarding 100% participation per student by having a big party for all who qualify at the end of the program.  CiCi’s Pizza has agreed to sponsor this event.  Dana Graveno remembered a “social” in the café as an example of something new and different for the students.  The program will run for six weeks.  Kindergarten and First will receive help as needed in order to provide reason for their participation.

Dads and Doughnuts:  Jennifer Bramlett went to the new Krispy Kreme and talked to the manager who said he thinks we can get the doughnuts here in Franklin.  After Thanksgiving her committee will meet and get details in place.  The dates are currently set for the last Thursday and Friday in January.  Volunteers are still needed.

Lil’ Soldier:  Andrea Hobbs stated the toy drive will run from November 29th to December 10th and we may want to get the word out to the students prior to Thanksgiving break.

President’s Report:  Kim Harby reviewed planned PTA purchases for the remainder of the year as of this date:

Kim Harby then explained to the Board about a new business, “Pump-It-Up”, that is offering schools a monthly program similar to Skate Night.  The charge would be $6 per Oak View student with Oak View receiving $2 per child.  Kim stated that we would set a date possibly the end of January and offer the program to see how it goes over, but we will not try to establish a monthly date at this time.

Pump-It-Up also offers a program called “A To Play” where they give certain times for students to go in and play with a ½ price discount when they have at least one “A” on their report card.

Mrs. Harby reminded the Board that “Ident-A-Kid” will be at Oak View on Thursday.  PTA badges will be made free of charge for those who need them.

Mrs. Harby also reminded the Board of the Chorus Program set for December 16th.   Volunteers are needed at 6:00 p.m. to take over for Fourth Grade parents who are working so that they may go to the chorus event.

Mrs. Harby further requested that anyone available during Thursday’s Thanksgiving Feast Day please sign up to work the front desk so that it will be manned all day.  Lunch on that day will begin with Kindergarten at 10:30.

At this time, Mrs. Harby announced that the next PTA meeting would be a holiday get together at the school and would begin early on the 14th.

Mrs. Goodwin reminded the Board that there are families of many different cultures within Oak View so we must all be careful to observe different faiths.

With no further business for this date Kim Harby adjourned meeting at 4:50 p.m.
