Common Terms

Articulation/ Speech sound production disorder:

Reduction in ability to use speech sounds for communication.* Speech sounds develop at different ages.  It is normal for young children to have difficulty saying some sounds.

Language disorder:

Difficulty understanding and using various aspects of language or language performance that is below what is expected compared to a typically developing peer

Voice disorder:

Abnormality in the way the voice sounds (pitch, loudness, quality or resonance)

Fluency disorder:

Disruption in the flow of speech (difficulty connecting sounds, syllables, words, phrases/ sentences when speaking)

Eligibility:

Findings indicate that the student has a disability.  Therapy services may be recommended once eligibility has been determined.

IEP (Individualized Education Plan):

Document detailing what services will be provided and how progress will be measured
