Frequently Asked Questions about Gifted Services

What type of programs does WCS offer gifted and talented students.

Williamson County does not provide a program for gifted and talented students.  Williamson County seeks to meet the needs of the intellectually gifted student inclusively in a differentiated setting amongst their peers. For students who are adversely affected by their intellectual giftedness, WCS provides gifted services.

My child was in a gifted and talented program in another state and  has/hasn't an IEP (individualized education plan).  Will he/she automatically qualify for gifted services in Tennessee? A child that does not come into our school system with an  IEP from the state of Tennessee must go through the GEIT  (General Education Intervention Team) process.  Gifted services are under the Special Education umbrella and a student must demonstrate a need for services.  (Students must be working a year or more beyond  the  grade level peers at their school in the general education classroom or students must demonstrate an affective need).  The State of Tennessee has specific criteria that students must meet as well as being able to demonstrate a need for services.

My child currently holds an IEP from the state of Tennessee for the disability of intellectually giftedness, how do I continue services at a school in Williamson County?  Please contact your previous school and make sure that all current special education records (including psychological evaluations, observation check lists, eligibility form, and current IEP) get forwarded to the school your child will be attending. Next contact the gifted consultant who will arrange a meeting with you to formally transfer your student. One of the questions that your gifted consultant will ask at the new school will still be "Does your child need services in this school?"  When the current IEP comes to an end, it is the job of the IEP team to determine whether needs can be met in the general education without gifted services.
