Medical Policy
If your child needs to take
medication during the school day, the following guidelines must be observed:
A parent will complete the appropriate authorization form giving
direction and permission for medication to be taken at school. A physician’s
signature is necessary for a prescription medication. If your child is taking
an antibiotic that is prescribed three times a day, please do not ask the nurse
to give it at school.
Children are not allowed to carry medication with them on the bus
or at school (with the exception of inhalers). The parent must deliver the
medication to the clinic. If a child carries an inhaler in his/her backpack, an
authorization form should be completed and on file in the clinic.
All medications must be delivered to the clinic in the original
bottle with the child’s name on the bottle. Non-prescription medication must be
delivered to school in new unopened containers. The smallest bottle available
is preferred. All prescription medication must be labeled by the pharmacy to
include the time that the medication is to be given. (i.e., give twice a day at
7:00 am and 12:00 noon)
For those children who take daily medication, only a one-week
supply of medication should be brought to school at a time. The empty medication
bottle will be sent home with the child to be refilled and returned by a parent.
If a child is severely allergic to a particular antigen (i.e.,
bee sting, nuts), the nurse will work with the parent to develop an emergency
care plan. The plan, along with any emergency medication, will be kept in the
office in a place that is easily accessible to the nurse or other trained staff
members in case the child has an allergic reaction.
