Summer Programs

 

·      The University of Southern California offers USC Summer Seminars in the following topics:  An Introduction to Photography as an Art Form; News: The Basics and The Future; Introduction to Video Game Design.  Students will study with USC instructors, earn three university elective credits, get a taste of college life, participate in field trips, and meet & work with students from across the country and around the world.  For more information and an online application, visit http://www.usc.edu/summer.  Call 213-743-5679 with questions.

 

·      University of Alabama offers various programs for the summer, including Museum of Natural History Expedition, American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive, Athletic Camps, Camp Cash, Capstone Business Academy, Capstone Summer Honors Program, Community Music School, Crimson Music Camps, ESL Summer Programs, Michael A. ·      Mississippi State University offers Design Discovery Camp for students (age 16+) interested in the field of architecture and/or other related design fields.  The camp is June 15-22.  Visit www.caad.msstate.edu/designdiscovery2007/ for more information.

 

·      University School of Nashville will host a Summer Language Institute for individuals in 7th grade through adulthood.  Session One offers Chinese, French, German, Gaelic, & Spanish (levels 1 & 2) and is held June 16-20 from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.  Session Two offers Arabic, Chinese, Gaelic, & Spanish (level 2) and is held on June 23-27 from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.  Session Three offers Spanish (level 1) on July 28-August 1 from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.  Tuition is $325 until April 30th and $350 afterward.  To register, visit www.acceleratedacquisition.com and select “Programs & Registration.”

 

·      Penn State and University of Colorado offer Summer Enrichment for students entering 10-12 grades next year.  To apply for either campus, visit www.bestsummerever.com.

·      New York University offers a summer program in which students can choose from over 1,000 courses.  Students in attendance will immerse themselves in New York City’s vibrant downtown scene and live in NYU housing for as little as $200 per week.  For more information, visit www.nyu.edu/summer/2008.

 

College Programs

 

·      Georgia Tech invites interested students to Preview Day June 27.  To register, visit www.visits.gatech.edu/preview.

 

·      Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio provides financial assistance to first-generation and other underrepresented students to make it easier for them to visit Kenyon and decide whether the college is a good fit for them.  If you are interested in taking advantage of this Travel Grant, see Ms. Duvall in the Counseling Center.

Career-Related Programs

Contests

 

·      Abbott & Fenner Scholarship: For juniors and seniors who are 16 and over.  This is an essay contest, and two winners will receive $1,000 each.  For the topics, or to enter, visit www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.  Deadline is June 20, 2008. 

 

·      The 2009 Miss Tennessee Teen USA pageant will be held on October 2-4 at Austin Peay State University.  Girls age 14-19 are eligible to participate.  To enter, visit www.misstennesseeusa.com.

 

 

Testing Preparation

·      Mary Lee Bunch will offer an ACT preparation course for the June 14th ACT.  Classes will be held at RHS on 5/21, 5/28, 6/4, and 6/11 from 2:45-3:45 PM.  Registration fee is $80.  Click here for the registration form.  Mail the registration form and the check for $80 directly to Mary Lee Bunch & Associates.

 

·      Knowledge Points in Cool Springs always offers ACT & SAT Prep programs.  Call 771-1226 or visit www.knowledgepoints.com.  Their website offers a free QuickTest that will provide immediate feedback and an indicator of ACT/SAT areas of strength and weaknesses.

 

·      Columbia State Community College will offer a prep course for the September 13th ACT.    Sessions will be held on August 14, August 21, August 28, and September 11 from 5:30-8:00 at CSCC’s Franklin campus (near Franklin High School).  The cost is $89, which covers the cost of the textbook and all materials.  To register, call Barbara Spencer at 931-540-2660.
