Job Shadow Day: I recently went to shadow Holly Thompson who is a morning anchor
on News Channel Four and also has a show called “More at Midday”. I had to arrive promptly at 3:30am, which
was a little hard to do when I am use to going to bed at 12am. The security guard told me that she would
come through the doors to the left. I sat there quite and nervous not knowing
what to expect and sure enough a couple minutes later … there she was. She
was so welcoming to me and so incredibly nice. I was a little taken back when I thought
that the news anchors had their own make-up artist and trays of food (which I
thought when I was a little kid) but she arrived just how she looks on TV at
3:30 in the MORNING. I will have to admit I was a little surprised that it
was possible to be that awake that early. So, we then went upstairs where the
producers were editing scripts and revising them. And sure enough a couple
seconds later she was showing me how she sits down and read what has been
written and revises it in her own way. She put underline marks where she
wanted to show emphasis and numbers she typed out. But this morning was a
little different from others she was to be doing the morning show with just
one anchor, because her co-anchor was doing what channel four calls “Cool
School of the Week”. The show lasted from 4-6 am and let me tell you I never
knew something could be that fun at such an early time. I also got to meet Tim Ross, Jennifer
Heron, Sara Dorsey, and producers, directors, videographers, floor managers,
bosses. I met so many people and everyone was great!!!!!! We sat down after
the 4 o’clock show was over, and recorded stuff for that day that would be
aired later on in the day. We had a couple of live feeds through out other
show with weather and updates; it was really quite an experience. There was
also something very special and I was the only person from outside the WSMV
station workers that new about something they were keeping under wraps. I got
to witness a brand new set that was being built and rehearsal on it. All of
the new equipment they had was amazing. They had cameras that were being run
by joy-sticks up in a room above. They were going to be showing everyone else
next Thursday. I have to admit it was a pretty impressive studio. Later on
there was a meeting with the “bosses” telling that they needed to have all
the kinks out by next Thursday, because this was the deadline. This would be
the first day they would be airing in the new studio. Later on it was time
for the “More at Midday” show. The show included different stories but most
of all a cooking segment. I sat there watching from the side checking out how
the run-down was and how Holly was improvising everything and sounding like
it was a script… I was impressed. The
show was almost over and was coming closer to time where the taste testing
was. Tim Ross decided in the last literally 3 seconds that I should go up
there… so I did. I called my family and everyone missed it. Although it was
only probably 3 seconds of air time that I was on… it’s probably something I
will remember for the rest of my life. I walked away with a lot of valuable
things that day and not only media stuff, but life lessons that have taught
me a lot. It was one of those
experiences that will last a while. |

next adventure. Holly is home grown and grew up in Why I love living in Hobbies -- Ok--- My hobbies USED to be.... Shopping... which I
absolutely love!.. Going to the movies-- love to
catch the latest flick.... Working out at the gym.....Horseback riding......
occasional golfing..... and traveling..........
HOWEVER---- my newest hobby supercedes the previous
listing.... my newest hobby is loving and caring for my sweet son who is now
four... Oh what a joy and a true blessing.... My husband and I found a whole
new level of love-- the love a mother and father have for their children...
Wow! I never dreamed it could be so powerful-- and demanding! Favorite Movies -- My favorite all time movie is "Gone with
the Wind" -- and, I admit, this is really weird -- I LOVE scary movies.. I don't know why... but it's true... the nail-biting,
the pounding heartbeat, the gasp.... yes..... Love it!! Most Memorable Story -- There are so many meaningful stories out
there--- but I would have to say the most incredible story involved the U.S.
Air Force "Thunderbirds" ... and I actually got to fly with
them!.... Oh how scary-- but oh, how exciting!...
They even prepped me on what to do if we had to eject-- not the words you
want to hear before the flight... I even got to "pilot" the F-16
jet myself for a few seconds..... They are true professionals that really
know their job and do it with great precision, great enthusiasm-- and I was
impressed! Favorite Time of Year -- No question here -- definitely
Christmas!! The holiday season of giving..
celebrating Christ's birth..., the special family time with loved ones, the
excitement, the Christmas trees, the twinkling lights, smell of cinnamon, the
festive decorations, and of course the occasional snow that gets everyone so
excited! One Thing Most Folks Don't Know About Me -- Years ago-- I played
in a Christian Rock Band...(the long hair and all!) Copyright 2006 by WSMV.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or
