Library Materials and Review Selection Policy

This practice is delegated to the professional staff in each school by the School Board.  It is the responsibility of the library information specialist to be familiar with the curriculum, teaching strategies of the faculty, and the abilities and maturity levels of the students for whom the instructional materials (print and non-print) are to be used.  ...The selection of books and materials shall be guided by the high principles expressed in the American Association of School Libraries.

In order to assure that the instructional materials are an integral part of the educational program, the following selection policies are adopted:

To provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum and personal needs of the students, taking into consideration their varied interests, abilities, and learning styles;

To provide materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literacy appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards;

To provide a background of information which will enable pupils to make intelligent judgments in their daily lives;

To provide materials on opposing sides of controversial issues so that students may develop, under guidance, the practice of critical analysis;

To provide materials which represent multi-cultural diversity;

To used unbiased judgment in the selection of the highest quality materials.

Selection Criteria and Procedures

In implementing these principles, the following practices are to be observed in selecting books and materials for the school library information center:

Selection should be consistent with the mission of the Williamson County Board of Education.

Selection should be made to provide balance in materials present different points of view.

Selection should be made based on knowledge of the existing collection of books and materials in the library information center and based on the current curriculum.

Selection should be a continuing process to assure that the collection maintains quality and currency.

Gift materials shall be judged upon the same criteria as above mentioned for new book and material purchases. The library information specialist will decide whether to place the items into the library collection.
