The mission of the Williamson County Schools is to cultivate the ability, intellect, and character of each student.

The vision of the Williamson County Schools is a student-centered, academically enriching district that supports the collaborative educational efforts of students, teachers, staff, and community.

General Information

 

 


History

W. P. Scales Elementary School was opened in the fall of 1977. Scales originally served a student population in grades K-6. Currently, Scales serves a student enrollment of 635 in grades K-5. The students of Scales live principally in a residential area west of Franklin Road. The population and ethnic make-up of Scales is reflective of the community and is of an increasingly diverse cultural and social background.

We believe the school is an extension of the community guided by democratic principles, dedicated to enhancing the rights and privileges of a citizen, and laying a foundation for leadership.

Scales currently serves the following neighborhoods: Woodway, Heathrow Hills, Fountainhead, Brentwood Country Club, Meadowlake, Princeton Hills, McGavock Farms, Foxland Hall, Belle Rive, Belle Rive II, Dekemont Downs, Highlands of Belle Rive, Chapel Hill, River Oaks, Wildwood, Laurelwood, Derby Glenn, Lennox Park, Highland View, Holly Tree Farms, Waterford, Hillview Estates, Forest Park, Deerwood, Brentwood Hills, Landmark, and Oakhampton, Williamsburg Estates.

Honors and Awards

  • Southern Association Accreditation in December, 1981; 5 year review in April 1986, 10 year review in November, 1991, 15 year review in November, 1996, and 20-year review, October, 2001.
  • Validated in 1981 by the State Dept. of Education for the Gifted and Talented Program
  • Incentive Grant from Peabody College at Vanderbilt, 1983-84, to help improve our Basic Skills
  • Incentive Achievement Award which is monetary incentive to schools who show improved performances
  • Certificate of Distinction in the Elementary School’s Recognition Program, May 1986
  • Award of Merit in the 1990 Partnerships in Education National Partnerships Award Competition
  • Participant in Tennessee Department of Education STAR Project to research large and small size classrooms
  • Since 1992, computers have been networked to the Central Office. All classrooms and personnel are networked.
  • Member of Brentwood Chamber of Commerce
  • Received Incentive Award from state department, 2000 and 2002, for showing improvement in test scores.

Parents will receive a progress report each nine weeks. Parents who have questions should address their concerns with the teacher. Teachers will schedule a yearly conference. Parents requesting additional conferences should contact their child’s teacher to schedule an appointment. Conferences are by appointment only. Currently participating in Curriculum Alignment; the majority of teachers have received extensive training in innovative methods for Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. Professional workshops include Windows on Math, AIMS, SUMS, Multiple Intelligences, Governor's Academy, Reading Renaissance, Writer's Workshop and Using Data to Drive Instruction.

The Scales Guidance program is directed by counselor, Peggy McNamee and Katie Lipscomb. Some of guidance activities include: parenting classes; character education; perfect attendance; mentoring program; and community partnerships.  Each month we spotlight a character word. 

Students also attend music, art, physical education, computer lab, and library classes on a regular basis.

Accelerated Reader and S.T.A.R. are both used in addition to each classroom's reading program


Additional Programs

  • Extend-A-Hand Volunteer Program - Scales uses all "extra hands"
  • Enrichment/Creative Thinking - Provides students with higher level thinking skill experiences. All teachers are trained to teach these skills.
  • Nature Trail - A half mile trail on the school property that provides awareness to the many aspects of nature such as water, timber resources, animal habitats, and geological characteristics.
  • Field Trips - Each grade level takes field trips which are educational and adapted to their studies.
  • Physical Education - P.E. teachers who emphasize classes of motor development of physical skills.
  • Library - Each class goes to the library each week for instruction from the Librarian. Scales has approximately 8,000 books.
  • Guidance - Planned classroom activities, and special groups.
  • Music - Students attend weekly music classes.
  • Special Education - Two resource teachers, speech therapist, occupational/physical therapist, vision specialist, gifted specialist, and psychologist are on staff with special needs.
  • Art Program - All students receive art instruction.
  • English as a Second Language - Instruction for students with limited English through an ESL teacher as needed.
  • Accelerated Reader
  • The YMCA Fun Company offers both before and after-school childcare.
  • Computer Lab--K-5 classes attend instructed computer classes weekly. In addition, mobile lap-top computer labs are available for teachers to take to the classroom.

Student Motivational Programs

  • Character Education
  • Perfect Attendance Program - Award for perfect attendance.
  • Destination Imagination - provides a team effort of creative thinking (spontaneous) and problem solving (long-term) tasks in competition at the regional, state and national level. This is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.
  • Presidential Physical Fitness Program
  • Presidential Academic Achievement
  • Mentoring Program
  • Monthly Birthday Parties - A monthly "Happy Birthday" party is given for all students with birthdays in that month. The June, July and August birthdays are celebrated either in May or September.
  • Contests - students are encourage to participate in the Brentwood Women’s Club Poetry Contest.
  • Jr. Achievement Program

Community Involvement

  • Spirit Week (September) - "Invest in Your Child", the school’s one major fundraiser coincides with a Scales "Spirit Week" for students.
  • Mustang Roundup (Spring) - Fun evening of food and entertainment for the whole family.
  • Parenting Classes - Parenting Classes held periodically throughout the year.

Other School Information

  • Student Directory - Published each year, each family receives a directory.
  • Student Pictures - Individual and classroom pictures are available.
  • Skate Day - Coordinates one day each month for the Scales' family to skate. A portion of the proceeds benefits the school.
  • Chick-Fil-A Community Night-families can eat together one night a month at the Brentwood restaurant. A portion of the proceeds benefits the school.
  • Recycling - The school receives a share from the recycling bins located on Wilson Pike. In addition to the recycling of aluminum, glass, newspaper, plastic and cardboard at Kroger, the school has a "Great Can Contest" twice a year for additional revenue.
  • Recycling of cell phones-receives a fee for each phone turned in.
  • Book Fairs - A good quality of books at moderate prices.
  • Enrichment Committee - schedules educational enrichment programs for the school and aids in compiling resources for enrichment activities in area other than the arts.
  • Yearbook - An annual publication.
  • Newsletter - A school-wide newsletter is sent home at the beginning of each month with news updates, menu and calendar for the month.
  • Publix- Using the school scan card (pick up one in School office), we receive a percentage of sales.
  • Target-using the Target Guest Card awards a percentage of the sales to the school.
  • Harris-Teeter contributes a percentage of all purchases by patrons who designate Scales as their school of choice.
  • Book Store - Located in the office area and open 8:00 to 8:20 am. daily.
  • Community Projects-families of Scales collect staple food and necessities (December) and collect new and used books for local agencies helping children at risk.
