Hi!! My name is Heather McHugh and this will be my sixth year teaching
visual arts at Scales. Prior to teaching I was a mural artist creating
murals for businesses and homes across the mid state. I have my Masters
of Arts in Teaching, Art Education and my Bachelors of Arts in Liberal
studies/ Fine Arts- both from Belmont University.
I absolutely adore teaching and I
feel so fortunate on a daily basis to have a career that is likewise my
passion!
In 2007 I was fortunate to be selected as a Fulbright Memorial fund
Scholar to Japan, where I traveled, learned and taught at schools in
Okinawa. In the spring of 2008 I was given the honor of being named the
Scales “Teacher of the Year” and was likewise selected by Humanities
Tennessee as “Outstanding Teacher of the Humanities.” This research
fellowship allowed me the opportunity to travel to Greece this summer
and research how art and architecture documented societal progression-
it was a profound experience I can’t wait to share with our students!!
Art is the perfect catalyst to introduce students to our global
community and emphasize the importance of a variety of cultures and
ideas that are captured through creativity.
Outside of teaching, I have 4 children who make my life rich and compel
me to be the best human I am capable of becoming. (3 teenagers-yikes!).
I love swimming, traveling, writing, cooking, working in the yard and of
course, making art! I live
in Franklin with my 4 children, 2 crazy dogs and
our kitty cat.
