I teach children with special needs, typically in grades K through 4. I provide special support to students with autism, learning disabilities, language impairments, and other impairments using inclusion and pull out options for implementation of goals and objectives. Many of my students require modifications in the classroom for success in reading and math. One of my daily tasks is to work directly with the classroom teachers to facilitate the appropriate use of modifications for each student with special needs. |

Students must qualify for special education services by meeting federal and state guidelines. Each referral case must follow a process that includes a battery of assessments and observations over a period of time so that an appropriate and complete education plan can be written to meet the child's individual needs. |

Specially trained teacher assistants and I work to provide service to many of the students on my caseload. Most of my students are successful with a minimal amount of service time per day, but some of the students require full time support to be successful in their academic day. The amount of service time for each special needs student is individually determined at the Individual Education Program (IEP) meeting. The IEP team always includes parents, the classroom teacher, the special education teacher, and an LEA representative. The team could also include the guidance counselor, school psychologist, and any related service provider such as the Occupational Therapist or Speech/Language Pathologist. |
