Summer Institutes 2008

June 9th-June 13th, 2008
Summer Institute One
Monticello, Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.

Who? All 4/8 teachers; 45 teachers maximum.

Teachers will travel to three of the richest sites in early American colonial history.
Participating teachers will be accompanied by a historian and will receive personal tours of each location. Accommodations, meals, admission to destinations as well as daily participation stipends will be provided. A detailed agenda will follow.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation operates the world’s largest living history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia—the restored 18th-century capital of Britain’s largest, wealthiest, and most populous outpost of empire in the New World. Here we interpret the origins of the idea of America, conceived decades before the American Revolution. The Colonial Williamsburg story, “Becoming Americans,” tells how diverse peoples, having different and sometimes conflicting ambitions, evolved into a society that valued liberty and equality.

June 21-23rd, 2008
Summer Institute Two
Civil War Battlefield Tour.
Who? All 5/11 grade teachers; 30 maximum.

Teachers will travel to Stones River, Chickamauga, and Shiloh to learn about the history and significance of the Civil War in the region. Participating teachers will be accompanied by a historian and will receive personal tours of each location.  Battlefield excursions will be conducted as day trips with teachers returning to middle Tennessee each evening.  Lunches, participation stipends and lesson planning stipends will be provided.
