2008-2009: Fifth Grade Curriculum for First Nine Week Period

These are the grade level expectations (big ideas) we will be addressing the first nine weeks.  Sequence may vary by teacher.

Math:  Number and Operation, Data, Probability and Statistics

  • Extend the understanding of place value through millions and millionths in various contexts and representations.
  • Make, record, display and interpret data and graphs that include whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
  • Describe the shape and important features of a set of data using the measures of central tendency.

Language Arts: Many of these are on-going concepts that are taught all year.

·         Demonstrate knowledge of Standard English usage, mechanics, and spelling.

·         Demonstrate knowledge of Standard English sentence structure.

·         Continue to develop oral language skills necessary for communication.

·         Continue to develop listening skills necessary for communication.

·         Write in a variety of modes and genres, including narration, literary response, personal expression, description, and imaginative.

·         Write frequently across content areas.

·         Apply appropriate skills and strategies to comprehend informational text.

·         Experience various literary genres and understand basic characteristics of each.

·         Understand the meaning of plot, character, setting, point of view, and theme.

 

Social Studies:  Geography, Economics

·         Understand how to use maps, globes, and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information.

·         Describe the potential costs and benefits of personal economic choices in a market economy.

·         Understand fundamental economic concepts.

·         Understand the interaction of individuals, families, communities, businesses, and governments of TN and the US in a market economy.

 

Science:  Life Science (Cells), Heredity

  • Distinguish between the basic structures of plant and animal cells.
  • Describe how genetic information is passed from parents to offspring during reproduction.

Guiding Questions (on-going all year): 

  • What tools, skills, knowledge, and dispositions are needed to conduct scientific inquiry?
  • How do science concepts, engineering skills, and applications of technology improve the quality of life?
