Technology Use in the Classroom

Technology can be used to enhance the learning of all students, including students with autism. Computer skills are very important to teach as soon as possible, as many children with autism will rely on computer skills to communicate, complete work, and possibly in a future job setting. Remember that using technology in the classroom includes using any computer program or application. Children with autism greatly benefit from visuals that can be created on the computer, such as graphic organizers or story webs.

I have listed some ideas and helpful websites for incorporating technology into the child's day, but I would love to hear from you! If you have ideas of using technology with students with autism, email me and I'll post the ideas on this page.

Differentiating Curriculum Ideas

1. Have the student sit in the back of the room and look up resources on the internet or play a game on the computer related to the lesson being taught. (Example from an Oakview Elementary 5th grade class- Student with autism was looking at pictures of animals who live in the grasslands on the computer as the other students in the room were reporting on their research on the grasslands.

Grolier Encyclopedia Online

2. Some of the textbook companies have online activities or printable worksheets to go with the content in the textbooks.
