School
Rules:
A school should be a caring, creative, constructive community of learners that
works to help all members reach their goals. Students learn best in a
community that is purposeful, just, communicative, disciplined, celebrative, and
reflective.
At Westwood Elementary, we
have three "community expectations" to help students and teachers achieve the
kind of school climate that Westwood Elementary Students need and deserve:
|
WES
students are RESPECTFUL
WES students are RESPONSIBLE
WES students are READY
|
Students begin
the school year by defining these expectations and describing what RESPECTFUL,
RESPONSIBLE, and READY students look like, sound like, and act like.
Classrooms will agree on appropriate behaviors and will develop a set of
appropriate consequences for behaviors that do not meet expectations.

School History
Fairview Elementary School opened in August, 1962 with an enrollment of 533
students in grades 1-8. The school was built to fill an existing need for a
comprehensive consolidated elementary school in the western part of Williamson
County. It united Triangle, New Hope, and Fairview Schools. In 1971, grades 7
and 8 were moved to the high school and in 1972, a Kindergarten program was
implemented. Due to continued growth in the area, the 6th grade was transferred
to Fairview Middle School in 1982 and the 5th grade in 1988. In August, 2000
Westwood Elementary School was opened due to increased enrollment. Fairview
Elementary and Westwood Elementary shared their location until the new building
for Westwood was completed and opened on January 5th, 2001.
Community
Peaceful, quiet, convenient, and serene, are a few words to describe Fairview's
small town atmosphere. Located in the vicinity of Nashville, Brentwood,
Franklin, Dickson, and Spring Hill - we are a short commute to almost anywhere
in middle Tennessee. Bowie Nature Park is the largest city operated park in the
United States with a glorious 850 acres and numerous lakes to enjoy. Bicycling,
horseback riding, fishing, running, and walking can be enjoyed every day of the
year. The community raised over $100,00 to build and construct the Treehouse
Playground, which is handicap accessible, which is located near the entrance to
the park. With the proposed I-840, Fairview expects to grow and prosper from the
first exit on the interstate. The city and community are dedicated to monitor
grow in order to retain our present small town atmosphere.

Parent/Teacher
Conferences
A formal conference schedule coincides with the first nine weeks report card.
Additional conferences are held, by appointment, upon request.
Parent Support
Organization
Westwood Elementary has a very dedicated and active PTO. They promote Breakfast
with Santa, Parent's Night Out, playground maintenance days, among other things.
The PTO is very active in assisting teachers, recognizing teacher efforts
through National Teachers Week, National Education Week, and Teacher
Appreciation Day. PTO meetings are held regularly throughout the school year
with a large number of faculty present.
Special
Programs
WES is involved in the Accelerated Reader Program. Each year there is a school
wide point challenge. Reading Recovery, a program sponsored by Title I, is
offered to first graders. This is an individualized program that teaches
students to become independent readers and writers. Junior Achievement,
Destination Imagination, and Newspapers in Education are also offered to WES
students.
Library/Media
Center
WES Library/Media Center is staffed by a library media specialist and a library
assistant. An average of 430 students (K - 5th grade) visit the library each
week. Our entire media center is computerized. Students are able to search for
books and information on computer terminals. The AR program provides immediate
feedback to our students. Our services include the following: scheduled and open
check out times for all classes, storytelling, an annual book fair, video
programs, encyclopedias, and internet access.
Academics
WES, an accredited elementary school by the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools, currently has 23 classrooms for grades K-5, one , two Resource
classrooms, two Reading Recovery classroom, a Reading Specialist, a shared Music
teacher, a Library-Media Center, a Guidance Office, a shared Art teacher, a
shared Spanish teacher, and a Gym for Physical Education classes. Education at
WES focuses on meeting the needs of each individual child. The use of
developmentally appropriate practices allow teachers to meet each child where
they are and implement a growth plan for them.
Guidance
We have a full time counselor. She meets regularly with each classroom to teach
and reinforce skills such as group dynamics, problem solving, anger management,
and self esteem. The counselor meets throughout the year with small groups
addressing specific common concerns. The counselor is also available to work
individually with students and to meet with and support parents and teachers.
Special
Education Services
We have a number of special education programs at Westwood Elementary. Our
Extended Resource program provides consultation, inclusion, support help
sessions, and full instruction in math, reading, and language arts. Students
enrolled in our gifted program receive service within the regular education
classroom with the help of our gifted consultant. Related services include
speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Fine Arts
WES strongly believes that physical education is an essential component in the
total development of all children. A certified, physical education teacher
exposes students to many types of activities designed to increase each child's
self-esteem, endurance, strength, coordination, and sportsmanship. WES
participates in the Cooper Institute's FitnessGram program and tests students in
grades 1st - 5th two times each year. There will be a WES jump rope team and a
WES skills basketball exhibition team. During our jump rope unit students will
participate in a school contest in January for the most consecutive jumps.
