Activities

Walnut Grove sponsors opportunities for students to participate in fun and exciting activities that offer additional learning experiences.  Walnut Grove has more exciting events available on our school calendar.

Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination (DI) is a very successful creative problem solving competition. Parents are involved coaching teams of seven children.  Children meet 1 - 2 times per week between September and February.  Teams solve a long-term problem over a period of several months.  Commitment is needed from students and parent coaches after school hours.

Family Fun Night
This is a fun filled evening for families at Walnut Grove.  All Walnut Grove students and parents are invited to attend this event usually held the second Friday of September.  It takes on a carnival like atmosphere with games, dinner, silent auction, cake walk and disco.

Fifth Grade Sports Olympics
Fifth grade Sports Olympics is a special event held in February or March of each year.  Activities are coordinated by the P.E. teachers and Walnut Grove parents.

Field Days
Field Days are held in the Spring (May).  All grade levels participate in physical competition under the direction of their P.E. teachers.  Every child participates and is a winner.  Each grade has a designated  time frame for field day.  Parents are welcomed and needed to keep times, tally scores and cheer on the children.

Jump Rope Club
This before-school program is overseen by our Physical Education Department.  Jump rope club is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade students who are interested in increasing their jump rope skills, coordination and cardiovascular endurance.

Rock n' Roll Read-A-Thon
This event is scheduled for February.  During this event, children stay after school until approximately 6:00 p.m., eat snacks, and be entertained by professional dancers, storytellers, go to a sockhop and READ!

Rainbow Singers Chorus
The Rainbow Singers Chorus meets after school one day each week for interested 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to give our elementary students a first opportunity to perform in an ensemble setting.  Enjoying its fourth year, this group has performed at area malls and retirement homes, for state PTA convention and in downtown Franklin for special community celebrations. They give two concerts each year at Walnut Grove.

Safety Patrol
This program is designed to increase the safety of our school environment.  Fourth and Fifth grade students are chosen through recommendations by their teachers.  These students perform different duties before school and during dismissal.

Student Council
Walnut Grove students are taking an active part in helping to run their school through the student council.  Today, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are working with faculty members to plan school activities and solve problems. The Council will help the students learn about democracy and good citizenship as they set their own goals and rules for behavior. Projects have been chosen and elections will follow in the spring.  One student is elected from each homeroom to attend all meetings.  He/she carries the ideas of the room to the meeting and reports back to the class. Committees are set up to work on different projects. Student volunteer of are chosen to work on a committee that interests them.  Council members prior to the holiday break proposed ideas for several projects to be implemented in the spring of 2004. The projects are as follows: (1.) Daily TV/Video production studio, (2.) Sound equipment set-up/take down training and operation, (3.) cookies for courage, (4.) school store/literature sales, and (5.) hot chocolate/coffee center for teachers.

Walnut Gove Make-A-Difference Club
The club is committed to community service and is comprised of K-5th grade students.  Enrollment remains open throughout the year, and all are welcome to participate. Our mission is to promote the development of character traits such as caring, responsibility, and citizenship by helping others.  Several teachers and parents work together to help the students with their projects. Parental involvement is encouraged and appreciated. The Make-A-Difference Club meets monthly, and  occasionally has additional meetings to perform  service projects. Since the club's inception in October, 2000, we have sponsored or assisted in sponsoring at least one service project per month.
