Welcome to Second Grade!
Second grade is a year of many new discoveries and challenges for
children. We invite you to look through our overview and learn
about the curriculum and programs which our students will be
experiencing this year.
Teachers at Walnut Grove Elementary plan lessons using State of Tennessee
curriculum standards and Williamson County Schools curriculum units. To view

Language Arts
Spelling
Spelling words are taken from words students use in writing. There
is also a cumulative review of words throughout the year.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is developed through independent reading, social studies, and
science curriculums.
Grammar
Students learn through Daily Language review and essential basic skills
studies.
Writing
Students primarily focus on personal experience writing and developing
writing into complete thoughts.
Reading
Students have a completely individualized reading program through
Guided Reading.
Math
Math concepts include:
addition, subtraction, time, money, measurement, fractions, geometry,
probability, and multiplication.
Science
STC kits include:
butterflies, weighing and balancing, soils, and simple machines.
Science also includes weekly experiments on heat, light, sound, magnets,
energy, chemical change, and animals.
Social Studies
Units include: famous people
in history, holidays, directions and map skills, current events,
pioneers, communities, our country, and famous Americans.
Specials Studies
Specials include Physical
Education, Art, Music, Guidance, Computer, and Library.
