Our curriculum, based on
standards established by the state and district, grounds students in the
basic skills that will enable them to meet a variety of academic
requirements.
Teachers at Walnut Grove Elementary plan lessons using State of Tennessee
curriculum standards and Williamson County Schools curriculum units. To view
a chart of the standards, visit

Language Arts
Spelling
We use the newly adopted spelling series by Houghton Mifflin. We
also use Word Wall Practice which is a Multiple Intelligence approach to
spelling. We supplement this with unit words.
Vocabulary
We study words from the spelling series, writing, novel ties, social
studies, and math topics.
Grammar
We incorporate grammar lessons from the Silver Burdett English series
and Daily Oral Language.
Writing
Students write in journals and they use writing prompts. They also
write reports, stories, and different types of paragraphs.
Reading
Students develop a variety of reading skills through novel studies,
thematic trade books, and Accelerated independent reading. The
Harcourt Brace basal series is also incorporated.
Math
The aligned math curriculum
is supplemented with the Scott Foresman Math series.
Science
We study the STC kits:
sound, plant growth, chemical testing, and rocks and minerals. We
also teach the solar system, human body, and simple machines.
Social Studies
Students focus on map skills,
landforms, continents and oceans, communities, different cultures, and
government.
Specials Studies
Specials include Physical
Education, Art, Music, Guidance, Computer, and Library.
