Welcome to Kindergarten!
The first year in school is a great adventure away from home for
children. Kindergarten is a fully integrated curriculum utilizing
thematic units covering all subject areas including Physical Education,
Music, Art, Guidance, Library and Computer Lab classes.
Teachers at Walnut Grove Elementary plan lessons using State of
Tennessee curriculum standards and Williamson County Schools curriculum
units. To view a chart of the standards, visit

Language Arts
Spelling
We encourage the use of phonetic spelling while encouraging and guiding
students toward the use of conventional spelling by using word walls,
word lists, word charts, and word cards.
Handwriting
We introduce manuscript handwriting and all students have weekly
practice using a developmentally appropriate approach.
Vocabulary
Students are introduced to a wide range of vocabulary through songs,
poems, themes, literature, word games, interactive writing and shared
reading.
Grammar
Children identify and use different types of punctuation such as
periods, question marks, quotation marks and commas.
Writing
Students write in journals, participate in shared and guided writing,
make class books, and at times their own stories.
Reading
We promote a balanced literacy program that includes phonemic awareness,
direct instruction in phonic concepts, sight word practice, shared
reading, guided reading, and basic print concepts.
Math
Students learn to sort,
graph, pattern, count and compare. They are exposed to calendar
skills, numeral writing and identification, addition and subtraction.
They learn to identify simple fractional parts, and to tell time to the
hour.
Science
We study things, wood,
self-concepts, liquids and solids. We learn to compare, predict,
measure and observe using our senses.
Social Studies
We study ourselves, our
community, and the world around us.
