Enrolling Your Child as a Peer Model-
Early Childhood Education
January 28, 2010
Enrolling Your Child as a Peer Model
Federal law requires the public school
systems to serve children with special needs from their
third birthday through the age of twenty-one.
Williamson County Schools believes that children with
special needs as well as children with typical development
are best encouraged to grow when included in the same
general education classroom setting together.
For this reason, we seek peer models with typical
development for our Early Childhood program.
This program focuses primarily on character
development, including the development of social skills,
language skills, and personal skills and experiences to
enable children to facilitate positive interactions with all
people. The
early childhood theme-based classroom setting encourages
academic, social, language, fine motor, gross motor and
cognitive development of all children through the use of
play and other developmentally appropriate activities.
If you are interested in enrolling your
child in the Walnut Grove/ Hunters Bend Early Childhood
program for the school year 2010-11:
We will begin accepting applications on February 1st
- March 19th. You will be notified in April if your
child has or has not been placed in one of our classes.
Applications received after March 19, 2010 will be put in a
waiting pool, in case an opening arises during the 2010-2011
school year. Please note that both classroom placements and
our waiting pool are based on a variety of factors including
age and gender and not necessarily based on the date you
submit your child’s application. We do our best to match
peer role models that will best compliment the makeup of our
classrooms and students.
Our peer model program is a wonderful
opportunity for many children but we realize that it is not
necessarily the right match for all children. The peer role
models play a vital role in modeling appropriate behaviors,
communication and play skills, it is important to consider
this when determining if this is the best match for your
child. If you have concerns about these or other areas of
your child’s development it is recommended that you contact
WCS student support services at 472-4145 to set up a
developmental screening.
To enroll your
child or to have your child placed on our waiting list,
please complete the

with the program. This will serve as an opportunity for both
you and your child to meet his/her teachers and ask any
questions regarding your child’s classroom placement.

Our early childhood program runs four days
per week with no class on Wednesday. Peer role models may
EITHER attend a morning session (8:35-11:35) or an afternoon
session (12:35-3:35). We currently have two classrooms at
Hunters Bend and one classroom at Walnut Grove. While
preferences may be considered they cannot be guaranteed.
Please note that
our Early Childhood classrooms do differ slightly from the
Williamson County Pre-K programs. You can find more
information about the Pre-K programs that are offered in our
county along with their application process on the
Williamson County Schools website.
