Sports… Junior Varsity Basketball (Boys) – Woodland vs. Freedom Middle (2/5/08):

Fighting off a fourth-quarter comeback, Woodland’s boys’ junior varsity basketball team continued its winning streak against Freedom Middle.  With determination and teamwork, the warriors successfully defeated the stars 36-30.

The girl’s varsity basketball team rolled to a 43-11 victory over the Freedom Stars. Leading the way in scoring was Jayne Rice with 10, Mallory Campbell with 6 and 5 other girls scored 5 points each. Defensively, the girls swarmed the ball, not allowing Freedom a chance to get close to the basket. The girls play again tomorrow here at home versus Sunset. Good luck, girls.

The Varsity team beat Freedom 36-31 last night. Great job guys. The JV and Varsity boys will have late practice today.

The girls JV team suffered a 13-16 loss at Freedom last night.  Leading the team in scoring was Kathryn Hutson with 5 points.  The girls will play Sunset at home on Thursday at 3:30.

There will be a brief meeting in the cafeteria during Channel One on Friday for all those interested in trying out for the tennis team.  A handout will be given regarding tryout dates and times.

Club News…

Woodland Mathletes had a great day at the Nashville Regional MathCounts Competition last Saturday, Feb.2nd, 2008.
Frances Ding won the first place and is the Nashville Regional champion. She will join with 3 other individuals from the Nashville region as well as a 4-student team from the Montgomery Bell Academy to compete at the State competition on March 15th.  Winners of the State competition will go to Denver, Colorado, May 8-11, to compete at the National level.

The Woodland Middle School team comprised of Venkata Amarthaluru, Roshni Kaushick, Ryan Weiss, and Timothy Jiang, performed very well in the competition and won second place in the team category beating 13 other schools from the Nashville region including several top private schools. Although we lost to the Montgomery Bell Academy, who was last year's state champion in the team category, we still have tremendous potentials for getting to the top next year.
Congratulations to all eight students who represented Woodland at the competition:  Frances Ding, Nishant Subramani, John Asirvatham, Matthew Hoke, Venkata Amarthaluru, Roshni Kaushik, Ryan Weiss and Timothy Jiang.  Woodland is very proud of you.  Good Luck Francis at the State Competition in March!!!
