Art
Art exposes students to various mediums and allows individual expression with
hands-on activities which are linked with curriculum requirements in each grade
level. Some of the topics and mediums explored are art history, sketching,
pastels, clay, watercolors, cartooning, painting, pottery and more.

Band
Woodland Middle School offers an extensive Instrumental Music program including
a band at every grade level as well as a jazz ensemble.
The sixth grade band is a Beginning Level class with emphasis on proper playing
technique and music reading.
The seventh grand band is an intermediate level class. This class also
emphasizes proper playing technique and music reading, as well as scales and
grade Level Two musical literature.
The eighth grade band is an advanced level class in which the students continue
to develop their playing skill. Technique, music reading, and music theory
are the focus as this group explores grade Level Three music.
The WMS Jazz Band is an extracurricular ensemble offered at Woodland Middle
School.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of
improving students’ keyboarding speed in all grades. Williamson County has
established a minimum competency of 30 net words per minute on three separate
days of timed writings. During these timed
writings, the keyboards must be covered. Students are evaluated with
the MicroType Pro instructional software to evaluate and improve their touch
keyboarding skills while in Computer Technology.
The Woodland Middle computer lab is state of the art. Microsoft Office
is used on the PCs in the lab, giving students in all grades varying degrees
of exposure to Word, Excel, PowerPoint
and Access.
All computers in the lab have network and Internet access. Digital cameras
and web cams are also available for use in the lab and students use digital
editing software to prepare pictures for documents and/or web pages.
Advanced students in all
grades assist in maintaining the school web page and/or creating web pages for
other teachers at Woodland.
 Music
The music curriculum at WMS is more of an appreciation course than a performance
course. The 6th grade music curriculum includes objectives covering topics
from music theory to culture. The students learn to read rhythms and
experience the music of other cultures.
The 7th Grade music
curriculum includes objectives covering topics from music theory to musical
theater. The students learn to identify the instruments of the orchestra
and study Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the
Opera".
The 8th grade music
curriculum includes objectives covering topics from music theory, piano, guitar,
and Music/Art History. The students express themselves through art and
music projects.
 Physical
Education
The Physical Education curriculum offers students many team and individual
sports and other activities. Each student has ten weeks of physical
education each year, rotating through the enrichment period. Some sports
and activities offered are: volleyball, basketball, flag football,
softball, badminton, soccer, team handball, indoor soccer, pickleball, kickball,
and golf. There is a yearly P.E. fee of $25.00 that includes the required
uniform and locker rental.

Speech,
Debate, and Drama
"The arts must be at the heart of every child's learning
experience if…they are to have a chance to dream and to create, to have
beliefs, to carry a sense of cultural identity."
- James D. Wolfensohn, former chairman of The Kennedy Center
The overall goal of the Speech, Debate, and Drama program is to:
1.
Develop oral communication skills.
2. Enhance confidence in front of groups.
3. Develop a student’s creative and critical thinking abilities.
At the sixth grade level the students are enrolled a drama
sampler. During this three week class students will learn creative movement,
elements of plot, and story design through a mime project and a puppet
project.
At the seventh grade level the students will participate in
a cooperating curriculum between the music and drama department. The 9-week
music/drama program consists of three weeks of Public Speaking, Music Theory
and Musical Drama.
At the eighth grade level the students participate in a
focused creative communication class. In this class students will learn
techniques of acting as well as learn and prepare materials for competitive
performance through forensics tournaments.

Wellness
The
Wellness classes have changed this year. Coach Zeno is still teaching the
HIV/AIDS classes and Postponing Sexual Involvement to the 7th
graders, but the 6th and 8th grade classes are no longer
rotating into another room for Wellness. All students are participating in the
Fitnessgram physical fitness testing program that gives each student an analysis
of his/her physical fitness level and gives helpful advice as to how a student
may increase his/her physical fitness level. The testing is performed in the
gymnasium, and all data is analyzed in the computer lab. Each student receives
a printout indicating raw score on each test, comparison of each person’s score
to national norms, and suggestions on how to increase the fitness level in areas
that perhaps were not as strong as others.
Room 402 is now the drama room. This has caused some problems especially in
teaching the HIV/AIDS classes that are required by state law. Coach Zeno now
travels to 7th grade Focus classes to teach the class. Mrs. Haselden
has built into each session ample time in case of conflicts, etc. so that each
group has at least 15 days available to complete the course requirements.
