MISSION

The mission of the Woodland Middle School library media center is to provide all students with daily access to a variety of resources (print, non-print, electronic, and online formats) which correlate with the curriculum and allow students to become lifelong, independent readers and library users.

LIBRARY INFORMATION

STATS:

Total number of items: 15,576

Fiction titles: 5779

Non-fiction titles: 7500+

The library has a wonderful collection of books and materials. Whether you read because you have to, or you read for pleasure, we hope that you will take advantage of the resources that your library has to offer! We’re always happy to help you in any way we can!

You may come to the library during homeroom as long as you have checked in with your teacher first. You can come any time throughout the day as long as your organizer is signed and timed. On days we are closed for IAI or TCAP testing, we will still be open in homeroom! We are open for you from 7:15-3:00. There may be a reading class in here, so always use a quiet voice.

BOOK FAIR

Fall

We offer a Scholastic book fair in late fall each year. This is a jam packed week of contests, games, and at least one author visit! Our fair typically falls during late November or early December. The 2008 fair is scheduled for December 1-5.

SPRING

We offer a Barnes and Noble book fair in late spring. This fair is held in the Barnes and Noble store on Mallory Lane in Cool Springs. This is a great opportunity to purchase summer reading materials! Students will enjoy coming to the store to hear performances from the chorus, the band, talent show acts, and to see performances by forensics and destination imagination participants. The 2008 spring fair is scheduled for March 30-April 5.

Contact Patty Shannon or Kim Murphy to inquire about helping with either the fall or spring book fair.

WARRIOR READERS BOOK CLUB

Students can volunteer to be a part of this program. Students read and write book reviews for the books nominated for the Volunteer State Book Award and vote for the category for Middle/ High School. Students meet once a month in the library with Mrs. Anderson to discuss the books. Meetings are held during lunch time.

Shawnee (M), Cherokee (T), Iroquois (W), Chickasaw (Thur) 8th grade (F).

Students who read the required number of books and complete book reviews will be honored at the academic awards at the end of the school year.

READING COUNTS

Reading Counts is computerized testing for reading comprehension. Students read a book and take a ten question test on the computer. Books are labeled for Reading Counts according to what is appropriate for a particular grade level. Books are considered for reading level and content. Most books are labeled “red” meaning that they are for all grade levels; however there are some books that require specific designation for a certain grade level. Regardless, each grade level is presented with a wide variety of excellent books.

Grade level reading lists can be found on our sharepoint webpage.
