Students at Clovercroft Elementary are learning about history and improving their critical-thinking skills at the same time.

In third grade teacher Kristen Hood's class, students were tasked with creating an aluminum boat that could carry 102 pilgrims without sinking. The pilgrims, represented by pennies, traveled to North America on the Mayflower ship.

"We got 94 pennies in our boat," said third grade student Briana Emmel Isabella Chen. "Next time we'd make the boat lighter or add more layers. This is fun because we get to create a boat and get to do experiments. "
