Students at Franklin High are using fire to learn about elemental properties.

In FHS chemistry teacher Dena Leggett's class, students were given a selection of sticks soaked in different elements. At each station in the lab, students used a Bunsen burner to identify the element based on what color the flame turned.

"It's the basis of fireworks," said Leggett. "We also looked at gaseous elements through fireworks glasses that split the light into different color patterns. Students always enjoy these labs, and it's something really interesting for them."
